HBO's Lanterns gets the release update we've been waiting for

Months of waiting has paid off and an elusive trailer has not stopped anyone from seeing the light of revelation. Lanterns is coming this summer to join HBO's elite club.

After months of first looks and a recent trailer snafu, the anticipated date that was one of this upcoming DC Universe series’s biggest mysteries is finally set. Lanterns premieres this summer on August 16, and it has prized real estate in prime time on weekends to look forward to.

The next chapter in the DCU after the upcoming Supergirl will be taking up residence on HBO on Sundays at 9 pm. This timeslot is the same one held by HBO’s prestige programs leading the pack of content these days – from House of the Dragon (starring the Girl of Steel herself, Milly Alcock) and The Last of Us (starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey and based on the hit video game). It was also the timeslot held by the critically-acclaimed, Emmy-winning DC series The Penguin.

This summer release window shouldn’t really surprise anybody when it’s consistent with the timeframe last year in which Peacemaker’s second season dropped, and James Gunn’s Superman touched down on digital for an early debut on home VOD. Both of those projects had the rub of Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, and Lanterns will be no different. Guy will be back to “make a move” in some capacity.

But mainly, Lanterns stars Kyle Chandler as a seasoned Hal Jordan who is looking more jaded than usual, and it’s not his glow. Hal is training his noble rookie John Stewart, played by Aaron Pierre, as they head to the heartland to solve a foreboding case. An unlikely but potentially compelling start for these Green Lanterns of the DCU.

Partner in training

The seasoned ring slinger’s tests of Stewart’s resolve and worthiness to be part of the Corps, seen in glimpses, are questionable. Still, when you are policing space and fighting cosmic cataclysms as long as Jordan, you have to know what you’re doing (right?).

Hal’s behavior isn’t the only strange thing to notice. The show’s first trailer had a confusing rollout, as it was online and then gone in a flash. Theories surmised the disappearance was due to either an abrupt cancellation or noticeably unfinished CGI.

However, the real reason was reportedly music licensing; Warner Bros. somehow couldn’t get permission to use the Bruce Springsteen track “State Trooper.” This might be what led to the takedown from both YouTube and Max.

The trailer is also suffering through a debate about tone, as there wasn’t a lot of green to be found, and the colors are muted to match the desert locale. Lanterns takes inspiration from True Detective and is clearly leaning heavier in the direction of that popular drama than the DC Comics

Some like the departure, others (such as writer Grant Morrison) aren’t as receptive. We shall find out this August if supporters or doubters win out in the end.

Lanterns will officially premiere on HBO and HBO Max on Sunday, August 16, 2026.
