If you’ve been as desperate as Nicholas Galitzine’s Prince Adam to return to Eternia, well, you’re in luck. Deadline has shared that Masters of the Universe, which was released only in June, is already headed to streaming. The film, also starring Idris Elba, Camila Mendes, and Alison Brie, is available to watch on Prime Video starting July 22, 2026.

The live-action return of He-Man was in production for a long time before finally releasing in 2026. Critics seemed divided on who the film was for, but some had a lot of fun watching it.

What is Masters of the Universe about?

Masters of the Universe is based on the popular 1980s Mattel toy series, and subsequent cartoon, featuring characters from the fictional land of Eternia. In the film, Adam, an orphan on Earth, dreams of returning to his homeland—if only he could convince everyone around him that he wasn’t making up Eternia.

His land, in the meantime, is invaded and ruled by the evil Skeletor (Jared Leto). Eventually, Adam finds a way to get his hands on the Sword of Power, so that he can overthrow Skeletor. He might just succeed if he can get the help of Man-at-Arms (Elba), and his old friend Teela (Mendes).

Directed by Travis Knight, written by Chris Butler, Aaron Nee, Adam Nee and Dave Callaham, based on a story by Aaron Nee, Adam Nee and Alex Litvak, Michael Finch, Masters of the Universe was a self-aware and humorous adaptation of the source material for the big screen. Which is honestly the only way to go for IP that has characters named Ram-Man and Fisto.

Why is Masters of the Universe on streaming so soon?

There was a time when fans were expected to wait a reasonable six-twelve months before getting the chance to re-watch a newly released film. Those days seem to have well and truly disappeared. Masters of the Universe didn’t even get a two-month theatrical release window—per Deadline, the film was given 47 days in theatres.

Unfortunately, the film did not have the Power at the box office, raking in a domestic amount of $64,742,703 and a worldwide total of $113,474,410. While it’s understandable that studios want to recoup production cost and make some profit from their products, the hyperfocus on box office numbers as the only yardstick for measuring a film’s success means films don’t get much leeway anymore.

It’s come to such a point that when Supergirl underperformed at the box office, rumors were rife that the film would be on VOD within a month of its theatrical release - which may still be the case. Masters of the Universe got a little more time than that, but the trend of releasing underperforming movies onto digital and streaming earlier than anticipated will likely continue.

Masters of the Universe is officially available on Prime Video as of July 22, 2026.
