Could the fates smile upon DC fans, and grant their wish for the return of Pierce Brosnan in the golden cape and helmet of Doctor Fate? Speaking to GQ in an extensive profile about his career, Brosnan was asked about his sole foray into the comic book universe. His answer may surprise some.
Pierce Brosnan made a name for himself as the charming hero in Remington Steele, before making waves as James Bond. The Irish actor’s career has continued to cross genres, and shows no signs of slowing down. While he's tackled many films over the year, Brosnan’s only venture as a superhero was in the poorly-received Dwayne Johnson-starrer Black Adam.
Despite years of anticipation and hype around the film, and the attachment of a veteran actor like Brosnan, Black Adam couldn’t conjure much critical or box office acclaim.
In Black Adam, Brosnan played Doctor Fate, the mystical sorcerer who dons the Helmet of Fate. The character was part of an ensemble, but was, inarguably, one of the few redeeming aspects of the film. Not only did Brosnan bring his signature gravitas to the role, but he was able to cultivate friendly chemistry with Doctor Fate’s associate Hawkman, played by Aldis Hodge. The duo ended up being the emotional core of the film.
When GQ asked if Brosnan would be interested in returning to the role, Brosnan replied that he would. He seemed to have enjoyed playing the part, especially “the philosophy of that character.”
The return of Doctor Fate has been hinted at since Black Adam was released, and in the GQ interview, Brosnan himself said he’s heard of the character getting his own spin-off, either as a TV show, or a film. He’s also heard that Fate could be reprised in the next Superman film.
Doctor Fate didn’t make it through Black Adam, as he sacrificed himself in the third act. However, he is a sorcerer so it’s not like he needs to stay dead.
But, as exciting as these rumors are, that too coming from Brosnan himself, the issue is that Black Adam was among the last of the DCEU films released before the changing of the DC guard. Now, there’s a whole new team with new plans. The last vestiges of the previous slate are already being cleared away with the end of Peacemaker.
Doctor Fate could rise again, but most likely he won’t be in the form of Pierce Brosnan.
