The wait is over. House of the Dragon has returned, and the show has successfully recaptured the first season's grandeur. No more “commercial for season 3” criticism; the battle for Westeros was in full effect in the season 3 premiere, and it wasn’t a disappointment. There was a fair amount of action and dragons, but not at the expense of the storyline. That episode may have been better than anything in season 2 - not just because of the action, but the fact that every action will have consequences throughout the rest of the series.
The one thing that remains from the second season is that Aemond Targaryen remains an arrogant fool. When his mother Alicent Hightower was talking to him about being afraid, rather than admitting the truth, he denied it. Lucky for him, he heeded his mother’s warning. Otherwise, it wouldn’t have ended well for him.
The season 3 premiere ends with a highly anticipated moment for fans of the book, the Battle of the Gullet. There were dragons, people on fire, and deaths that are going to heavily affect both sides of the war. Among them are Jacaerys Velaryon and Admiral Sharako Lohar. Now, we head into the next episode.

Deaths to remember ahead of the next episode
House of the Dragon's season 3 premiere featured a surprising number of deaths and it quickly reminded viewers how barbaric the Game of Thrones shared universe can truly be. And we can't really call it all that surprising considering that this was the highly-anticipated Battle of the Gullet - it was clear that there would be some demises (even if those demises caught a lot of viewers off-guard).
As the series heads into its second season 3 episode, you can bet that the deaths will play a major role going forward, particularly as word of the battle's outcome reaches Rhaenyra. With that in mind, let's recap the deaths from the season 3 premiere and keep them in mind as we head into tonight's second episode:
- Ser Tyland Lannister
- Ser Jason Lannister
- Admiral Sharako "Bitchfist" Lohar
- Jacaerys Velaryon
- Vermax
What to expect in the next episode of House of the Dragon season 3
One of the biggest things to happen in the House of the Dragon season 3 premiere was the death of Rhaenyra Targaryen’s son, Jacaerys Velaryon. It was an honorable death that kept Queen Rhaenyra alive, but even a death with honor means nothing to a parent who has lost their child. That, on top of already feeling like she wasn't being taken seriously enough as leader, will undoubtedly lead to Rhaenyra going full Targaryen when she enters the battle. We don't know when she will leave Dragonstone, but when she does, hell hath now fury like a Targaryen woman scorned.
If it weren't for Rhaena Targaryen and her uncontrollable dragon Sheepstealer, Jace would still be alive. Rhaena couldn't contain or train her wild dragon, and it has cost Rhaenyra her son, and very nearly took Baela and Moondancer away from the family as well. The question I have now is whether or not Queen Rhaenyra can look past this and use Sheepstealer in her quest for the throne.
The heat is well and truly on in House of the Dragon season 3, so you can rest assured that the war for the throne between Team Green and Team Black has only just begun. It sounds redundant to say about a franchise like this one, but there will be blood on the way to the Iron Throne.
