The previous episode of HBO's House of the Dragon season 3 ended with something that many wouldn’t have expected to happen so soon: Rhaenyra and Daemon Targaryen flew into King’s Landing with the purpose of putting Rhaenyra on the Iron Throne. The goal was met, but it came with a consequence: Alicent Hightower’s father, Ser Otto Hightower, was beheaded.

Ottos' death will be seen as a betrayal of Alicent since she all but gave Rhaenyra a clear path to the throne. But this wouldn’t be a storyline from the Game of Thrones universe (or House of the Dragon itself) without some kind of betrayal during the transfer of power. Now, the question is how long until Daemon gets his hands on Prince Aemond Targaryen? Truthfully, that likely won’t happen later in this season.

Yes, the previous episode was everything that fans love about the Game of Thrones franchise. There was a good amount of dialogue, but it wasn’t boring. The story moved along with a balance of jokes, drama, and heartbreak. And, of course, there was action and dragons setting things on fire. And with that, here's when you can tune into the third episode.

House of the Dragon season 3 episode 3 runtime

House of the Dragon season 3 episode 3 is expected to be around 60 minutes long. That's how long it is currently listed for on the HBO schedule and, considering that the cable channel doesn't take regular commercial breaks, there's little reason to think that it won't remain within the hour-long timeframe. And, if this is the case, that would make it the shortest episode of the season thus far

While the third season has come out of the gate swinging with these larger-than-life episodes, those were technically envisioned by showrunner Ryan Condal as being the final two episodes of season 2 (and what a finale the previous episode would have been!), meaning that we're really heading into season 3 territory from this point onwards.

That's not to say that the episodes won't get longer as they go on. If you know anything about the Game of Thrones franchise, it's that they have unpredictably long runtimes which can change on a week-to-week basis. With the halfway point of the season approaching, we could once again witness longer runtimes as the battle for the Iron Thrones continues to intensify.

Every death in House of the Dragon season 3 so far

As we head into the third episode of House of the Dragon season 3, deaths are certainly something that must be accounted for. In the season 3 premiere, Ser Tyland Lannister, Ser Jason Lannister, Admiral Sharako Lohar, Jacaerys Velaryon, and Vermax (the dragon) were all killed. That did not stop as the second episode very much proved.

The sophomore installment featured a lot of dragonfire deaths, as well as those caused directly by invading factions. With that in mind, let's look at who all of the deaths in the previous episode so we can continue to keep track:

  • Ser Simon Strong, his sons, and Harrenhal guards
  • Guards of the Red Keep
  • Ser Otto Hightower
  • Jasper Wylde

What to expect in the next episode

Rhaenyra Targaryen may sit on the Iron Throne, but we aren’t even close to the end of House of the Dragon season 3. That means there’s a lot of time for something bad to happen to the current rulers of Westeros. There's also plenty of time for bad things to happen to the former rulers, which we're already seeing.

The last episode is the perfect example of this. The former king, Aegon Targaryen, hasn't been having the best time for weeks, while Aemond suffered a literal stabbing in the back when he attempted to take over Harrenhal. Meanwhile, Alicent and Helaena were taken prisoner by Rhaenyra's guards only to see the aftermath of Otto's death.

Speaking of Rhaenyra, how will she find her first days as Queen? Will she be accepted by those in King's Landing, and what kind of ruler will she be? The bar is pretty low after Aegon and Aemond, so we will see how high she plans on setting it in the upcoming episode.

If you’ve read the books, then you know that there’s a lot of story left to explore and that this is just the beginning of the madness. Stay tuned to Bam Smack Pow to find out what that means for everyone in Westeros.
