It didn't take long for House of the Dragon to once again take the world by storm. The Game of Thrones spinoff series returned for its third season earlier this year and quickly proved why it is still one of the most must-watch shows on TV - despite a mixed response to its second season. The tale, inspired by George R.R. Martin's Fire and Blood, saw Rhaenyra Targaryen ascend the Iron Throne after taking back King's Landing, becoming the rightful ruler of Westeros. However, as Rhaenyra soon learned, heavy is the head that wears the crown.
The new queen struggled with the demands and expectations of her kingdom, specifically because the gold was depleted and a lot of the townspeople wouldn't accept her as their queen. And it has all set the stage for what is undoubtedly going to be an epic season finale. The only problem with that is that it initiates an uber-long wait for the fourth and final season of the HBO series.
House of the Dragon season 4 won't be released for at least two years
House of the Dragon season 4 is expected to release in 2028. Yes, that is a whole two years away and it means that the show is very likely to continue its tradition of multi-year gaps between seasons. It's certainly unfortunate, but it's the way that things are for these larger-than-life productions in today's day and age, especially when the actors have other commitments to take part in, too.
Ironically, Game of Thrones managed to sustain releasing one season a year (with just one two-year exception throughout its eight-year run) but as House of the Dragon is more specifically Targaryen-based, there is a much greater need for special effects due to all of the VFX that is required for the dragons themselves (which only featured in one arc in the parent series and have a more regular role here). Showrunner Ryan Condal confirmed that special effects and post-production can take up eight months alone.
He also revealed in a recent press conference (via Gold Derby) that pre-production is coming along nicely, adding that they are "as far ahead as we've ever been at this point in crafting a new season" and that they are also "starting to turn drafts over to HBO". So, it sounds like things are in hand, as the cast and crew prepare to begin filming early next year.
Yes, production on House of the Dragon is expected to commence in spring 2027 and likely run for around 5 - 6 months. If it maintains the standard eight-episodes episode count that the second and third seasons did, then it will likely wrap production around September or October 2027, setting the stage for that long road of post-production - and potentially even a summer 2028 release.
House of the Dragon has historically been a summer show. The first season premiered in August 2022, the second in June 2024, and the third in June 2026. There is little reason to think that the fourth and final season won't mirror that trend and arrive in summer 2028.
The good news is that you wont' have to wait until 2028 for more content from the Game of Thrones Universe. No, the World of Westeros returns to HBO next year as A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 is set to premiere in 2027. The second season of the more comedic spinoff focusing on Ser Duncan the Tall and his young friend Egg has already been filmed, with showrunner Ira Parker indicating that it will likely arrive in early 2027.
That will undoubtedly keep audiences going as they await the conclusion of the Dance of Dragons and finally get the opportunity to see who will sit on the Iron Throne once and for all? Is Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen the rightful ruler? Have her actions justified that prophecy or is the crown too heavy for her head? Should Alicent Hightower have remained on as the one true queen? Or are her unhinged sons, Aemond and Aegon Targaryen going to stake their claims to the throne once more? It's all still on the table and the future of Westeros hangs in the balance. We'll just have to wait until 2028 to get the answers to those questions.
