It's been more than six years since we last saw The Man Without Fear star in his own stand-alone project. For quite some time, we weren't even sure we'd see Charlie Cox reprise his role as Matt Murdock in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But lo and behold, his comeback is nearly here. In just a few weeks, Daredevil: Born Again will be released and mark the return of fan-favorite characters such as Foggy Nelson, Karen Page, Wilson Fisk, Frank Castle, and even Dex Poindexter.
With so little time left to go, the Marvel PR machine is firing on all cylinders to get audiences excited for the Disney Plus series. That means we've recently seen many huge updates that paint a clearer picture of what's to come, and you don't want to miss them:
An unexpected character will make an appearance
We all know Daredevil: Born Again wouldn't be a proper MCU project if it didn't feature at least one exciting and "unexpected" cameo. So it didn't come as a shock when showrunner Dario Scardapane revealed we'll get to "see a character we never thought we would" during an interview with SFX Magazine. Matt Murdock's arrival in the MCU has been nothing short of eventful after crossing paths with Peter Parker and She-Hulk, and it seems we're just getting started.
While the identity of the mystery guest wasn't revealed, fans were quick to theorize it could be none other than Luke Cage. After all, Daredevil: Born Again will likely be an adaptation of Devil's Reign — a comic book storyline in which Wilson Fisk becomes the mayor of New York and abuses his power to outlaw all superheroes in the city. Luke was an integral piece when it came to ending the Kingpin's reign of terror, as he became the supervillain's successor by becoming the next mayor. Besides, it wouldn't be the first time we'd see the Power Man and The Man Without Fear sharing the small screen.
However, that pick is a little too obvious for audiences to "never think" it could be a possibility. So another option is the wall-crawler himself. After all, insider HolyField News reported Spider-Man will be seen on a news channel in Daredevil: Born Again. While it doesn't sound like a huge role, it could be a hint of better things to come. Especially when we consider season 2 will reportedly feature even more cameos.
The series was rated 18+ in the UK
When it was first announced that The Devil of Hell's Kitchen would be getting its own stand-alone series streaming on Disney Plus, fans couldn't help but worry. After all, many believed that the House of Mouse wouldn't venture into the same levels of violence and grittiness that characterized the Netflix show... and they were right. Disney didn't reach the goal, but they surpassed it.
Daredevil: Born Again is officially rated 18+ in the UK, a feat that not many Marvel superhero projects have achieved. For comparison, the first and third seasons of Netflix's Daredevil and the Deadpool movies are rated 15+, even when we can all agree they're extremely violent. So why the sudden change this time around? Well, it can come down to two major factors: The appearance of The Punisher and the debut of Muse.
We all know Frank Castle is a one-man army that beats his victims to a point where they're often unrecognizable. After all, the two seasons of his Netflix show also received an 18+ warning in the UK. Furthermore, the latest supervillain in town, Muse, is an "artist" in comic book pages who often likes to make paintings with the blood of his victims. Eventually, he even took his own life by willingly walking into a fire. So, yeah, his appearance in this show definitely won't be for the faint of heart.
On the bright side, it means Daredevil: Born Again will definitely retain the feel of its predecessors. Now it's just a matter of waiting to see if the characters themselves are just as well-written, speaking of which...
There won't be too many "navel-gazing" moments
If you were to think about your favorite moments from the Netflix Daredevil series, chances are a few action sequences are the first to come to mind. The one-shot sequences where Matt single-handedly takes down multiple bad guys are nothing short of memorable, while the superhero's fights against Bullseye were exhilarating, to say the least.
However, there are also other incredible moments that feature two characters simply talking about what it means to be a hero. The argument between Matt Murdock and Frank Castle about how to deal with the bad guys on top of a rooftop was pure perfection (and a personal favorite of mine across the show as a whole). So it might be a letdown to learn that Daredevil: Born Again, won't feature too many of these moments. Speaking with SFX magazine, showrunner Dario Scardapane said the upcoming Disney Plus show will feature "a lot less navel-gazing than before":
"The earlier show, at its best, was fantastic. At its worst, it was two characters in a room talking about what a hero is. I felt that had been done. I'm not taking swipes. I just didn't want to hear characters grousing about their lot in life. I wanted to see them doing things."
Talk about a polarizing take. Netflix Daredevil is, without a doubt, action-packed. However, there are certain episodes (such as Season 1 Ep. 2) that are a bit more slow-paced and feature one single action scene. The rest of the time? It's all about Matt coming to terms with his violent nature and trying to convince himself he doesn't enjoy it because that's not what a hero is supposed to do. Those dialogs were definitely a standout of the show, and fans wouldn't mind getting more of them. On the contrary: That's why we love the Daredevil series. So it remains to be seen how this new take on the character will do without those navel-gazing moments. Hopefully, Born Again still has a lot of heart that made its predecessor so iconic.
Daredevil: Born Again will be released on March 4, 2025 on Disney Plus.
