During the three-episode premiere of Invincible, Mark Grayson (Invincible) and Eve Wilkins (Atom Eve) finally started dating. What could have been a disaster after Mark confessed to speaking to a future version of Eve ends with them becoming a couple. And while no one is shocked by this, it should also be certain that they’ll never have a normal relationship. That part is confirmed on their first date.
While Mark and Eve are at a table, a mysterious portal opens. Future freedom fighters, Dropkick and Fightmaster (voiced by Cobra Kai and Blue Beetle's Xolo Maridueña) come through and ask for Mark’s help. As expected, Invincible assists them. What isn’t expected (if you’ve never read the comics) is having to fight The Immortal to save the future.
When people think about having superpowers, immortality is usually at the top of the list. Unfortunately, like any other ability, it comes with a price. Immortal has talked about losing loved ones throughout his centuries of life. What we see here is another cost. Immortal goes crazy. He doesn’t remember a lot of his past and with that comes forgetting what it’s like to be human. This leads to him asking Invincible to do something he never wanted to do: Killing someone he looked up to.
This won’t be the last time Mark does something like this while wearing the blue and black costume, but this one is among the most important. Mark may not have liked the way The Immortal talked to him or about his father, but there was respect there. Having to kill someone he admired hardened him in ways you’ll see throughout the series. Sometimes, it was a gift. He learned that even good people can be bad. However, that lesson in itself is a curse. You'll see why when Mark meets the infamous Dinosaurus and helps do horrific things.

"You left me no choice. It was the only way to bring you back."
- The Immortal, season 3 episode 4
There’s a lot of foreshadowing into Invincible’s future. Some of it won’t make sense until the series ends. When it is over, this writer recommends going back to this episode. You’ll see what The Immortal was talking about and why he cursed Mark for what he did to him. However, this is one of those situations where Mark isn't to blame. The Immortal is using someone else as a scapegoat for his atrocious acts.
Season 3 continues to have the best writing so far. This one was particularly great thanks to The Immortal's voice actor, Ross Marquand. Marquand put his entire soul into this story. You could feel the pain in his voice as you’re watching Immortal beg for death. It was the pleading of a desperate man who lived too long and understood the terrible things he’d done and why he needed to be killed.
