Comic book video games have been popular for a long time. Over the last couple of decades, games like the Batman Arkham Trilogy, PlayStation’s Spider-Man, and both Injustice projects have been among the more popular and profitable franchises. It only makes sense that Skybound (with Quarter Up) would create an Invincible video game.

Invincible Vs did a fantastic job marketing the game. They understand that the franchise's bread and butter is comedy and bloody violence. That’s why there have been tons of social media posts highlighting that. But does that mean Invincible Vs is worth buying? Allow me to break down the important parts, and then you can decide for yourself.

Invincible Vs is available on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5 and PC.

Entertainment

The entertainment value of this game is phenomenal from the start. Before the game begins, there’s a warning about the violence, but it comes with a joke about how bloody it is. Soon after that, Invincible is attacked so intensely that a driver waiting for a green light is brutally killed. This lets fans know that this will be very much like the Prime Video show.

Gameplay

People who will buy this game will likely be the ones who enjoy the show, and not necessarily hardcore gamers, because the gameplay looked like the latter Marvel Vs Capcom ventures. As a casual gamer, that made me happy. Simplicity can be the key to success. However, people who play a lot of fighting games may not like that part.

Unlike most fighting video games, there isn’t a list of special moves that require the controller to press the classic down, down-forward, and then forward pattern. Instead, it’s a specific direction and then the attack button. Sometimes pressing two buttons at the same time does the trick. This makes it easier to string combos and use a character’s unique moves. The lack of difficulty with attacks could turn some gamers off. Thankfully, that’s replaced by challenging fighters.

If the attacks are going to be easy to perform, then the fights have to be challenging. So far, each of the battles has ranged from moderate to difficult. But, as I said earlier, I’m a novice gamer. Even if you’re someone who can string together a twenty-hit combo with your eyes closed, the next section makes up for easy gameplay.

Character personalities

As previously mentioned, the entertainment in Invincible Vs is perfect. The main part of that is the creative team staying true to the characters. Conquest talks like a lunatic, each of the Viltrumites is arrogant, and Rex Splode is a jerk, but funny. Most importantly, none of it feels forced. There are even individual conversations when characters interact with each other. It may not always be funny, but it’s true to the Prime Video show. However, if you don't like or know the show, it may come off as corny.

Story mode

The story mode will make or break things for a lot of people. Without it, it’s just another 3v3 tag-fighting game. The good thing about the story in Invincible Vs is that it’s not one from the Image comic book or the Prime Video show. It even includes a new character named Ella Mental.

If you sit down and play the story mode, you can complete it quickly. On top of that, the fights feel a bit repetitive. Nevertheless, after every battle, you’re given more of the story and a reason for characters who like each other to fight. That part was well done.

Lastly, the story isn’t over. You’re left with a cliffhanger that will lead into the next installment, and it’s a good one. It’s enough to get people pumped for the next installment. That should be enough to up the rating.

Character options

I truly appreciate that Invincible Vs as a versed amount of characters. No matter what your style is, there’s someone for you. If you like to keep your distance, Rex Splode and Cecil are perfect. If you want to get up close and personal, Monster Girl, Conquest, and Battle Beast are perfect. And then there are the balanced characters like Anissa (a personal favorite), Invincible, and Bulletproof. And, as I mentioned earlier, the ability to easily perform the moves makes things more fun.

It should also be noted that there are more DLC characters coming. Already announced are The Immortal and Universa. However, this writer knows that there are a lot of heroes and villains that people want to see and use. Among them are Agent Spider, Oliver Grayson, and (of course) Thragg.

As the story mode goes on, more characters will be released. The way games drop downloads throughout, we could get a Viltrumite version of Debbie Grayson. I for oen am all for that.

Final review

In short, this is a fun game. As it was said time and again throughout this article, if you’re a fan of fighting games and need a challenging set of moves, this isn’t for you. But if you enjoy the genre, Invincible, and entertaining projects, you’ll have fun playing Invincible Vs in the story mode and arcade.
