Back in September 2022, Marvel and EA's developer Motive Studios announced that an Iron Man video game was officially in the works. Few details were revealed about the upcoming title, other than that it would be a single-player, third-person adventure. But regardless of the mystery surrounding the Armored Avenger's upcoming project, superhero fans were absolutely ready to suit up and fly across the skies.
There haven't been many Iron Man games over the years, and the ones that have hit shelves have been met with mixed reactions. Fortunately, Motive Studios' previous work with the acclaimed Dead Space remake made fans hopeful that a bright future lay ahead for Tony Stark. Unfortunately, the excitement was followed by a long period of silence and uncertainty. No official trailer or announcement about Motive's Iron Man has come our way in nearly four years, raising many questions about the video game's fate. Many believed Marvel quietly canceled it, but now we know that's far from the case.
Motive's Iron Man trailer leaks online
An unfinished version of the Iron Man video game trailer has leaked online, giving us our first glimpse at what Motive has in store for us. The footage kicks things off with a sequence of the Armored Avenger flying across a large city, basically confirming the game will be open-world. Along the way, we see some of the hero's traversal abilities, such as doing rolls, performing a 180-degree turn mid-flight, and activating turbo for some extra speed. What makes this specific portion of the gameplay all the more promising is that Motive's version of Iron Man moves significantly faster than his Marvel's Avengers counterpart (you know, that short-lived Square Enix video game).
The trailer also gives us our first look at combat gameplay, with Iron Man being able to dodge and shoot energy beams mid-flight. Of course, there will also be land combat, and players will be able to seamlessly switch between battling their enemies on the ground and in the air. During a blink-and-you-miss-it moment, we also get to see that there will be some sort of "crafting system" involved, where players will be able to tinker with a circuit board to potentially unlock new weapons.
Multiple Marvel villains are also teased. Obadiah Stane seems to appear around the 58-second mark, while Madame Masque steals the screen at the 1:50 mark. Speaking of which, Whitney Frost has become the leader of A.I.M. in recent comic-book storylines, so perhaps a similar scenario will happen in Motive's Iron Man, explaining why the Armored Avenger will fight so many "technologically-enhanced" henchmen.
Interestingly, we also get a tease of Iron Man fighting against who appears to be Crimson Dynamo. Iconic Marvel landmarks such as the Helicarrier are also present, and there's a brief moment where Iron Man is seen on some Japanese hills, potentially fighting Silver Samurai. This could indicate that the campaign missions will take players outside the open world and into smaller, dedicated levels.
While the trailer looks incredible, there are a few things to notice. For starters, the footage has an "AUG26 TEST" watermark, suggesting everything we're seeing is from a recent build. However, some sections have unfinished VFX, hinting that the trailer's official release is still a long way off. Maybe there's a chance that Motive will have the reveal ready by The Game Awards later this December, but it isn't far-fetched to assume it won't come our way until 2027. Furthermore, the footage ends with the placeholder text "Release Window," meaning Motive hasn't yet decided when the video game will be released. That's yet another clue that Motive's Iron Man won't come our way anytime soon.
On the bright side, we know the game isn't canceled as many had theorized, and we can't wait to see what the final build looks like.
