The previous episode of IT: Welcome to Derry began with a flashback to the early 1900s, where a young Francis Shaw encounters Pennywise. Luckily, he was saved by a young indigenous woman named Rose. The two become friends, but Francis eventually has to leave when his father is transferred.

After telling Rose that he's leaving, Francis asks her not to forget him. She says Derry has a way to make people forget things. This is something mentioned in the IT lore that remained true later in this episode. Because it's clear that Francis doesn’t remember the monster he saw, while Rose (who never left Derry) remembers him and the thing that lives in Derry.

Decades later, Francis is looking for something that could help America prevent or win wars. Unfortunately, he doesn’t know that it’s something he’s encountered before and that it’s dangerous. So, when Dick Hallorann returns from his mission, he tells Francis that the thing they’re looking for shouldn’t be messed with. Francis doesn’t understand why. Meanwhile, fans saw what was coming.

The creative team did a fantastic job with the reveal of Pennywise. It was a moment fans of the franchise were waiting for, and, thankfully, it wasn’t overdone. Viewers saw glimpses of the monster, heard his creepy voice, and the scene was over before it became too much. It left this writer wanting more, and that’s what the creators strive for: a reason you (the viewers) to return.

What to expect in IT: Welcome to Derry episode 4

At the end of the previous episode, the kids get proof that something supernatural killed their friends (this happened in episode 1). Sadly, we can guess it won't matter. Besides the fact that none of the adults will take them seriously, Ronnie’s father is a Black man in the 1960s; a time not known for its tolerance. The police have decided he's the killer, and that's that.

However, there is some good news. We should expect the military to take notice. Leroy’s son, Will, is going to tell his father what he saw, and it will get back to Dick and Francis. After that, fans can expect things between the kids and the military to escalate quickly.

This is speculation, but I believe there’s more to Charlotte Hanlon than we know. While she and her husband (Leroy) had to move because of her activism, perhaps there’s more to it. Maybe she has some abilities that we don’t know about that will be revealed later in the series. Because people are scared of things they don't understand (on top of her being a strong Black woman), the decision may have been made to move before things got bad.

Also, if she has abilities, it could be why she and Dick vibed so well at dinner. They could have been conversing with their minds. That would allow her to tell her husband's colleague not to press too hard on why they moved. We’ll have to wait and see if any of this is true. If it is, remember you heard it here first.
