Months of speculation ended yesterday as Warner Bros. officially announced the cast for the new era of Middle-earth. According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum will bring back beloved characters like Frodo Baggins, Gollum, and Aragorn, but it is now confirmed that Viggo Mortensen will not be back as Strider.

Jamie Dornan has been officially cast as Strider, the noble ranger who is destined to become King. Also joining Dornan are Leo Woodall as Halvard, Kate Winslet as Marigold, and returning cast members including Ian McKellen, Elijah Wood, and Lee Pace. McKellen will reprise his role as Gandalf, Wood will be back as Frodo Baggins, and Lee Pace will be Thranduil. Also returning as actor and director is Andy Serkis, who will be behind the camera and reprise his role as Gollum.

The last few weeks were filled with rumors that Leo Woodall had been cast as Aragorn, aka Strider, but Woodall will play Halvard. Dornan is best known for his work in The Fall and his Oscar-nominated performance in Belfast. He'll have his work cut out, as replacing Mortensen in the hearts and minds of fans of the Lord of the Rings trilogy will be a mammoth task. He'll need to find a balance between playing a gritty, intense character and a highly compassionate man and future leader.

Leo Woodall is best known for his performances in The White Lotus and One Day, and he'll play a ranger and close friend of Strider. The duo will be on the hunt for Gollum. Lee Pace, who fans know and love from Peter Jackson's The Hobbit trilogy, returns as the Elvenking Thranduil. Kate Winslet will play Smeagol's grandmother, Marigol, suggesting the movie will feature flashbacks from Gollum's life before his tragic transformation.

For now, fans should feel cautiously optimistic about Jamie Dornan's casting as Aragorn, but only time will tell if he can meet fans' loftiest expectations. Andy Serkis, who recently confirmed that he will reprise his role as Alfred Pennyworth in The Batman: Part 2, will have to balance his time between both movies. Both will go into production next month, but Serkis will head off to New Zealand to focus on The Hunt for Gollum first. He will begin filming with Robert Pattinson at the end of the year. The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is poised for a December 2027 theatrical release.
