Lanterns could get a second season but is a spinoff movie also possible?

A rumor gaining ground on social media—which may be a serious red flag—suggests DC Studios is considering the idea of a movie to follow Lanterns instead of the elusive second season.

Hal Jordan's future in the DCU looks bleak based on the twists and turns fans see in Lanterns each week. However, the future of the Green Lantern overall within the shared universe could see its brightest day.

A second season of the HBO series goes without an official announcement for the moment, but there is preparation occurring as we speak behind the scenes. DC Studios tapped Halt and Catch Fire co-creator Christopher Cantwell to join the team as an executive producer and new writer alongside showrunner Chris Mundy, proving there is at least some momentum left on the series front.

Yet, according to recent chatter, the potential for the DCU’s resident ring slinger, be it Hal, John Stewart, or Guy Gardner, goes far beyond serialized streaming. A rumor making the rounds on X and elsewhere suggests a Green Lantern movie could happen, one that would function as the sequel to Lanterns. The film would also reunite Aaron Pierre with Nathan Fillion to either pair Guy and John for an adventure or perhaps pit them against each other.

Kyle Chandler more than likely won’t be back to reprise Hal since events in the show seem to eliminate them from the equation. Inside sources have also leaked that Chandler only signed up for a single season. So, aside from more holographic MacGuffins, the consensus holds that Chandler is done after the coming eighth episode—if he even makes it that far.

A sprawling big-budget movie might be the perfect forum to bring out the Parallax in a revived Hal who lives up to his embittered attitude and erratic behavior in Lanterns. They could also throw Sinestro into the mix to conjure up more chaos. Hal’s mentor was always formidable on his own, but his ambition and influence are known for bringing an entire Corps to his cause.

Everything is sheer speculation and fan service at this stage without a greenlight; therefore, take any rumor of a new Green Lantern film with a large grain of salt until further notice. After all, the Emerald Knight doesn't have the best track record when it comes to the silver screen. After the 2011 flop starring Ryan Reynolds, you couldn’t pawn a Lantern ring to get a follow-up or reboot made.

The issue wasn’t a lack of trying either. Zack Snyder did his best to coax the studio into a cameo from John Stewart in his cut of Justice League. He filmed an ending with actor Wayne T. Carr in the part, but it was nixed in favor of more exposition with Harry Lennix’s Martian Manhunter.

Around the same time, writer-producer Geoff Johns was developing a film around the Green Lantern Corps, while Arrowverse kingpins Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim were putting all their ducks in a row for their version of a Lanterns series for HBO Max. Seth Grahame-Smith was the assigned showrunner, and scripts were finished, but the network pivoted to DC Studios’ True Detective-tinged pitch.

With that direction locked in long ago, Aaron Pierre is poised to become the DCU ring bearer. After Lanterns wraps up, his next appearance will be in James Gunn’s Man of Tomorrow.
