Warning: This post contains major spoilers for episodes 1 through 7 of Lanterns.
With only one episode left to go, fans still have a lot of questions about Lanterns and its different mysteries. While the central narrative about the Manhunter has (seemingly) been resolved, there are still two major questions that need to be answered: Is Hal Jordan really dead? And if so, who killed him?
The opening episode of Lanterns ended with the shocking revelation that Earth's first Green Lantern was shot in the head. Audiences have tuned in week after week in the hopes of solving this case, and while concrete answers still elude us, we won't be living in the dark for much longer. On Sunday, Oct. 4, 2026, the eighth and final episode of Lanterns will be released, finally revealing whether Hal is still alive and who wanted him dead in the first place.
But before the finale hits the small screen, DC fans have seemingly solved the show's main mystery and uncovered who Hal's killer was. To add more fuel to the fire, HBO just released a new clip that could put any suspicions to rest. There's no denying it: Kerry Kane is looking like a very likely suspect.

Fans theorize Kerry Kane is responsible for Hal Jordan's death in DC's Lanterns
Lanterns has made a point of showing that everyone in Rushville, Nebraska, wanted Hal Jordan dead. Episode 7 even suggested that the iconic hero could've ended his own life. But while absolutely anyone could've shot him in the head, all signs indicate that it was none other than the town's sheriff, Kerry Kane.
Let's start with perhaps the biggest and most obvious reason why Kerry could be the killer: Hal Jordan's hologram (or Halogram, for short) suspects it was her. And if there's one thing we know about Hal, it's that his intuition is always right. There's no telling how he does it, but Earth's first Green Lantern always cracks the case even when he lacks the evidence.
We also know that Sheriff Kane is good at "playing dumb" and hiding vital information from others. After all, she knew about the Manhunter's true identity from the very beginning, yet she never told Hal or John Stewart. Instead, she sometimes pointed them in the wrong direction, proving she was willing to lie when she had her back against the wall. So, who's to say she isn't doing it all over again?
To make things a little more interesting, HBO recently released a new clip from the Lanterns finale. In it, we see Kerry publicly stand up for Hal in a restaurant and state that she won't let anyone threaten Hal's peace. At first glance, it would seem like she truly cares about him and his well-being. However, this could all be a ruse.

With one speech, Kerry convinced the whole town she was really in love with Hal and willing to protect him at all costs. That would immediately rule her out as a possible suspect. Besides, the show established that the Manhunter gave Kerry a "miracle" but refused to elaborate on what this gift truly was. The leading theory is that Kerry's son, Noah Macon, is a Manhunter created by Zoe.
Maybe Hal Jordan figured out that there's more to Noah than meets the eye. So, in order to protect her son from the Green Lantern Corps and the Guardians, Kerry simply shot Hal to silence him. Maybe that's the reason why she was so shocked when she crossed paths with the Halogram for the first time—not because she was happy to see someone she had lost, but because she knew both Hal's copy and John could uncover the truth behind her actions.
Of course, there's always the possibility that Noah was the one who truly killed Hal, or the show could pull an unexpected plot twist and reveal that the killer is someone audiences never suspected in the first place. But for the time being, all signs seem to indicate that Kerry may be the true culprit, and it will be interesting to see how it all pans out.
The final episode of Lanterns will be released on Oct. 4, 2026.
