Even though James Gunn seemed to confirm that a Superman sequel was already in the works following the movie's critical and commercial success, it seems as though the writer-director has continued to clarify his comments about his upcoming projects. If you were hoping that the new Superman movie would have a direct sequel, then you might not like his latest update.
In a recent post on Threads, Gunn shared that he was busy with "Peacemaker press" and "sequel writing." He also responded to a fan who asked when he was going to "tease the sequel" saying, "I just did!" Gunn's comments seemed to cause some confusion since his definition of "sequel" seems to be a bit different than what most fans are expecting and clearly hoping for.
When asked if Gunn was working on the same movie had previously mentioned months ago, one that featured Superman but wasn't a traditional sequel, the director gave further clarification: "Yes, yes, sorry. This is the same movie. Superman has a major role. It's not Superman 2." Another fan asked plainly whether the movie is a direct sequel, and he replied, "I'm not sure how you define 'direct sequel.' I pretty much think of Peacemaker season 2 as a direct sequel."

Superman 2 isn't in the works, according to James Gunn
Apparently, we should be going into Peacemaker season 2, which premieres on Aug. 21 on HBO Max, under the impression that it takes place directly after Superman. Gunn views the new season as a "direct sequel," though many fans would beg to differ and would much rather actually get Superman 2 instead of patiently waiting for whatever's cooking next in the new DC Universe.
Gunn offered another update regarding the "sequel" he's currently writing. A fan asked official confirmation about the film he's working on will be announced soon or if we will have to keep waiting, and he said, "It's a ways off." Well, let's not expect any announcements about what's coming after Superman or next year's Supergirl... even if rumors continue to swirl about Wonder Woman and other DC characters that will be reintroduced in the future.
The demand for a Superman sequel comes after the movie crossed a major box office milestone for DC Studios. After only a few weeks in theaters, the film has crossed the $300 million mark in domestic markets, which is the studio's first movie to do so since The Batman in 2022. Superman has also surpassed the total domestic gross of Man of Steel and is on pace to out-gross Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in the coming weeks.
Given all of Superman's success and the success that's still to come throughout its theatrical run, Gunn's DC Universe reboot is off to a hot start, and there's clearly a serious desire to see David Corenswet suited up once again, both as Superman and as Clark Kent. Whether it's in a standalone movie with Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) and Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) or a new enemy or another movie teaming up with additional heroes, we'll definitely be getting him back.
