Towards the end of 2024, both the One Piece manga and anime series have been dealing with production hiatuses. The manga series, published in the pages of the iconic magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump, has gone on and off hiatus in late 2024 as series creator Eiichiro Oda has been dealing with health issues. Following the end of the first part of the Egghead Island arc with episode 1122, the anime adaptation announced a lengthy hiatus beginning in October 2024. Luckily, there's good news for One Piece fans in terms of updates for both the manga and anime series.
The One Piece manga's publisher, Shueisha, digitally publishes the series — along with other iconic series like Dragon Ball and Demon Slayer — through its Manga Plus website and app. Chapters are also available digitally — along with hard copies of the manga's collected volumes — through the English translator, Viz Media.
Through Manga Plus, new chapters of One Piece go live simultaneously around the world in multiple languages including English, Spanish, French, Vietnamese, and Thai. Under the current publication schedule, new chapters go live on Sundays with the most common pace being either weekly or every two weeks. As currently listed on Manga Plus, the latest chapter (1137) was released on January 26 and the next chapter is currently scheduled for February 2.
While the manga has been going on shorter, more frequent hiatuses, the One Piece anime has been on a pre-announced hiatus since fall 2024. As originally reported by major anime site Crunchyroll, the initial announcement of the lengthy anime hiatus also included a scheduled return date of April 2025. As of this writing, a more specific date within the month of April has not yet been announced, though new episodes of One Piece have typically been released on Saturdays via Crunchyroll, which potentially helps to narrow it down a little. The Saturdays in April 2025 are April 5, 12, 19 and 26.
We'll be keeping an eye on the schedule of both the One Piece manga and anime and share any updates, including a specific date for the anime's return or the announcement of any future delays or hiatuses.
What else is in store for the future of One Piece?
Although new episodes of the One Piece anime have not been airing since October, producers Toei Animation have been filling the gap by releasing a re-cut and abridged version of the first arc of the anime. Featuring new opening and ending themes, this re-cut story arc is being released with the title One Piece Log: Fish-Man Island Saga.
New episodes have been airing on Crunchyroll on Saturdays. Although One Piece Log: Fish-Man Island Saga is not currently available with a dubbed voice track, Crunchyroll provides English, Spanish, and Portuguese subtitles. Crunchyroll has also announced that the next section of the Egghead Island arc will begin airing in the English dub starting February 11.
The Netflix live-action One Piece adaptation aired its first season in 2023. Filming of season two began in June 2024 and wrapped in December. Although a release date has not been announced as of this writing, it's becoming increasingly likely that it will be announced at some point in 2025. As a tie-in to the series, a collaboration with Lego has been announced by Netflix:
"The epic live-action adaptation comes to life in all-new Lego sets that take you right into the heart of the story. Soon, you’ll get to see your favorite Straw Hat Pirates in Lego Minifigure form for the first time ever, and experience iconic moments and scenes pulled straight from the hit series."
Netflix has also announced the production of a new One Piece anime series that will retell the story of the manga from the beginning. Details are sparse right now, but it has been announced that this new anime series will be produced in collaboration with WIT Studio, the animation studio behind the anime adaptation of Spy x Family, one of the most popular anime to air in recent seasons. We will have more information as it becomes available.
The One Piece anime series can be streamed be streamed on Crunchyroll and Netflix. The live-action series airs on Netflix. The One Piece manga series can be read online with a subscription to Manga Plus or Viz Media's Shōnen Jump app. However, due to licensing issues, not all content is available in all regions.
Although the schedule has hit some bumps lately, the One Piece franchise is getting back on track as 2025 continues. In addition to the return of the manga and anime to their regular schedules, there's a lot coming down the pipeline for fans to look forward to.
