In just a few months, players worldwide will get to step into a dark, twisted, and relentless version of Gotham City built from the ground up in corruption, crime, and most importantly, LEGO bricks. LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight won't only allow us to step into the shoes of the Caped Crusader, but it will also make us relive his many adventures across the years. In the words of James Gunn, the co-chairman and co-CEO of DC Studios:
"Everybody sees Batman in a different way. There's Batman as the do-good, Batman as the Dark Knight, this creature of vengeance. One of the many great things about LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is that it manifests all these different elements of Batman that we've loved over the years. People can experience this character maybe as fully as they ever have."
During IGN's Fan Fest Day 1, TT Games released a new trailer for LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight that recreates an iconic movie sequence Batman fans will recognize in a heartbeat. Furthermore, we also learned many interesting gameplay details in anticipation of the title's big release. If you thought playing as a man dressed as a bat wasn't crazy enough already, wait until you hear about the playable cats (because, yes, that's a new mechanic).
LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight trailer recreates an iconic Batman '89 scene; new gameplay mechanics revealed
LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight tells one single story that pulls inspiration from the Caped Crusader's many adventures across movies, animated series, comic books, and even other video games. The tale begins with a young Bruce Wayne in Wayne Manor, ready to go to the movies before tragedy strikes and his life is forever changed. Then we'll witness Bruce train to become a symbol with the League of Shadows, a la Batman Begins.
As Bruce grows and changes, so does everything around him. Case in point: the Joker will also evolve through the story. The Clown Prince of Crime will be a little lighter at first, with an origin story that mirrors Jack Nicholson's Joker in Batman '89. However, he will eventually become a bit more maniacal throughout the years, eventually acting like Heath Ledger's Joker in The Dark Knight.
TT Games is keen on bringing Batman's legacy to life on video game consoles—a massive undertaking that is perfectly displayed in their latest trailer. In it, we get to see a recreation of the museum scene of Batman '89, but with the iconic humor and slight tweaks that players have come to expect from the LEGO games.
Joker won't be the only character who will get to steal the spotlight, however, as Catwoman will be one of the seven different playable characters. This iteration of Selina Kyle will initially pull from Zoë Kravitz's performance in The Batman. However, players will eventually see her act more like Michelle Pfeiffer's iteration of the character in Batman Returns.
As Catwoman, you'll be able to have what's perhaps the coolest power ever and summon cats at will with a laser pointer. Your feline companions will be able to distract enemies and even scratch the villains' heads to do some damage. Furthermore, players can even control the cats themselves and go into tight spaces like vents, which isn't possible to achieve with a normal character.
LEGO games are known for featuring dozens of different playable characters, though with little to no gameplay variations. However, LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight will take things in a new direction, featuring fewer playable heroes but giving them different abilities, skins, personalities, and costumes.
With so many good guys watching over Gotham City, the villains will step up their game (quite literally). As LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight progresses, the different criminal factions will learn new skills and tactics to fight you. Fortunately, you won't have to battle these waves of bad guys alone, as the game supports local co-op. But if you want to go solo, then an AI will take over your companion character.
For a long time, fans wondered whether LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight would feature any references to Ben Affleck's Batman and the world that Zack Snyder crafted, and it has officially been confirmed that this will be the case. With so many different sources of inspiration to pull from, you can expect TT Games' upcoming rendition of Gotham to be massive. This world is richer and more alive than any other environment the iconic developer has created before. That idea is reflected in the countless civilians walking around Gotham City, a feature that wasn't even present in Rocksteady's Batman: Arkham saga.
As a bonus for pre-ordering LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, players will get access to The Dark Knight Returns Batsuit. Furthermore, owners of the Deluxe Edition will have launch access 3 days earlier than anticipated. Furthermore, a Golden Age Batsuit can be unlocked by signing up for a WB Games Account. But the very best part? It isn't long before we get to step into the square, LEGO shoes of Batman.
LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight will be released on May 29, 2026.
