A good storyline will keep fans interested in a superhero movie, but they also need action. Those are the moments that people often remember and go back to. Fans won’t forget Wolverine and Deadpool’s first fight, any of Batman’s many battles, and Nightcrawler’s epic arrival at the White House during X2: X-Men United. The latter is brought up because we could be getting another action masterpiece from Kurt Wagner in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Avengers: Doomsday.
During a recent Q&A with Marvel fans (via The Cosmic Circus), Alex Perez was asked if Nightcrawler (who will be played by the returning Alan Cumming) would have a “decent amount of screen time in Doomsday.” Perez responded, “I heard he has some incredible action sequences, one of which involves the use of his signature swords.” If this turns out to be true, then we could witness one of the greatest action scenes in superhero movie history.
You may be thinking that this is an exaggeration. We’ve seen a lot of groundbreaking action sequences over the years, and many of them came from comic book projects. That being said, among those elite scenes is the opening scene in X2: X-Men United, and it still holds up over two decades later. Imagine what it will look like now with the upgraded technology. And, as an added bonus, we could see him with swords.
If you need further proof of how good this can be, look no further than Nightcrawler’s fight with Wolverine against Bastion's minions in X-Men ‘97's three-part season 1 finale "Tolerance is Extinction". Not only do you see Kurt using three swords (one sword in each hand and one held with his tail), but the creative ways they used his teleporting abilities were superb. Among the creative visuals was seeing the teleportation from a different angle. Now, imagine what something like that will look like in live-action if the beloved X-Men character had a similar kind of scene.
But, wait, there's more!
We may already know some of the fight scenes that Nightcrawler will get involved in. During an interview with Buzzfeed UK, actor Alan Cumming may have accidentally spoil an upcoming battle in Avengers: Doomsday, saying:
“I’m sort of learning these fights, and I’m like, 'what, who am I fighting with?'… 'you’re hitting Pedro Pascal'.”
That could explain why the fight scene is being reported as incredible (or, fantastic, for the sake of the pun). We could see a fight in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that hasn’t happened in comics. Could the New Avengers (along with the Fantastic Four) go up against the X-Men?
As of now, these are all rumors. Avengers: Doomsday could be released, and Nightcrawler’s fight could be cut. Or, perhaps Kurt is fighting with Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards instead of against him. Either way, this writer is sure that everyone reading wants to see what Marvel Studios can do with Nightcrawler. And we can't wait!
