For a moment, 2025 was shaping up to be the perfect year for Marvel comebacks. Matt Murdock was finally the star of his own stand-alone show after more than six years, the Fantastic Four are set to have their first live-action appearance in decades, and audiences witnessed a group of Avengers assemble on the big screen for the first time since 2019. Marvel has been off to a great start, and fans are waiting for many more projects to come over the course of the year.
While we're on the note of comebacks, Marvel is also undergoing its redemption arc in the video game world. After the underwhelming failure of Marvel's Avengers and the poor sales of Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, there has been a glimpse of hope thanks to the heights reached by Marvel's Spider-Man 2 and Marvel Rivals. The two recent titles made gamers all the more excited about the next big release on the slate. Unfortunately, we're going to have to wait more than originally anticipated before finally getting to play it for ourselves.
2025 was truly shaping up to be a great year of comebacks, but that won't be the case anymore for the realm of superhero video games.
Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra has been officially delayed to 2026
Skydance Games has officially revealed that their debut title, Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, has been delayed to 2026. Originally, the game was targeting a Christmas 2025 release date according to Azzuri's voice actor, Khary Payton. However, gamers grew sceptical that the deadline could be met after the game failed to be promoted at big events such as The Game Awards 2024, and the developers remained radio silent for many months. So even if the news might not come as a surprise to some, it might still be underwhelming to learn the only thing we'll be playing is the waiting game.

The video game industry is no stranger to delays. But while their announcement can generate negative reactions (as it happened with the GTA 6 delay), it's undeniable that they are ultimately for the better. Cyberpunk 2077's rushed production translated into countless bugs and performance issues on its release, which initially affected the game's reception. On the other side of the coin, Nintendo has launched many Legend of Zelda titles to critics and gamers' acclaim, even when many of them have needed more time than anticipated to be polished.
Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra is shaping up to be a technical powerhouse based on the trailers released so far: Captain America and Black Panther's facial expressions truly feel next-gen, there will be four playable characters, and graphics are near photorealistic. Besides, it wouldn't be too far-fetched to assume the game will have top-notch gameplay mechanics as well as explosive set pieces considering that Amy Hennig, the mastermind behind the first three Uncharted games, is helming this anticipated Marvel adventure. Naturally, it takes time to polish all these different mechanics and features, which might be the reason behind the delay.
On the bright side, there isn't a huge gap between Christmas 2025 and early 2026. Better yet, we're less than a year away from finally getting to play Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra. That means a new trailer could be released on June 6 during Summer Game Fest. Hopefully, we can also get our first glimpse at gameplay to get a better idea of what kind of adventure is waiting ahead of us. Will it be an open-world game? Can we switch characters at any moment, or will it be level-based? Can we explore the futuristic streets of the city of Wakanda? Hopefully, we'll find out sooner rather than later.
Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra will be released in early 2026.
