Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra won't arrive until 2027 at the earliest

It looks like video game players will have to wait longer than originally expected.

Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra is still alive and well, but don't expect it to release until 2027 at the earliest. The upcoming video game developed by Skydance New Media was announced all the way back in October 2021 and has seen very few updates ever since. While a couple of trailers have come our way, fans around the world started to fear that a cancellation was on the cards after the title was pushed back from 2025 to 2026, only to be delayed indefinitely afterward.

Marvel's Black Panther was unfortunately canceled at EA after the developer behind it, Cliffhanger Games, was shut down. While many suspected a similar scenario would be on the cards for Skydance's upcoming AAA adventure, those fears were finally put to rest.

Skydance New Media is still working on Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, but it will come in 2027 at the earliest

IGN recently had the chance to talk to Shawn Kittelsen, the senior vice president and head of creative and production at Paramount Games Studio. Kittelsen confirmed that Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra is still in development, but it won't come our way any time soon due to the level of quality the team wants to achieve:

"It's happening. It's playable. I've got my SpongeBob controller here, but it's on my hard drive right now. So I can go through and play the build. We're continuing development on it, but Amy and the team have big ambitions for the level of quality that they want to hit. They are a relatively small team considering the AAA quality that they're delivering."

Skydance New Media is a relatively new studio. It was founded back in November 2019 and has since been led by Amy Hennig, the mastermind behind the first three Uncharted titles. Given that Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra is the very first game developed by a brand-new developer, a few setbacks have arisen along the way. Fortunately, the decision was made to let the team work rather than to rush the final product, as revealed by Kittelsen:

"So there was a decision made that rather than try to push the game out as quickly as possible, it would be better to focus on the quality of the game and making sure the team has time to cook. So we're giving them the time to cook. We believe in Amy and the whole team there and supporting them, and that game will come out when it's ready. But it is very real, and we are continuing to invest in it."

Although Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra is alive and well, it's still a long way off. When asked about its potential release date, Kittelsen said: "I don't think it'll be 2026." That's the main reason why so many big video game events—such as Summer Game Fest 2026—have come and gone without a single mention of Marvel's upcoming Black Panther and Captain America adventure.

With this new information, it isn't far-fetched to assume that The Game Awards 2026 could be the earliest we get to see more of Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra. That being said, chances are that 2027 will be the year when we get to learn more about it, in anticipation of a late 2027 or early 2028 release. At this pace, it wouldn't be surprising if we even see it ported to the next generation of consoles.

Fortunately, it seems Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra will prove to be worth the wait. Kittelsen mentioned that the groundbreaking graphics showcased in the trailers so far actually represent the final product:

"What you've seen in previous footage is what the game looks like, and we're making it with a fraction of the resources that you see on other AAA games of the same type, and really trying to push a new development model that's a lot more responsible and sustainable."

It's better for Skydance New Media to hold off on new trailers or gameplay deep dives until the release date approaches. So, with a bit of luck, the next time we see more about Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, it will be just a few months away from hitting shelves. Meanwhile, we have plenty of exciting releases to look forward to, such as Marvel's Wolverine and MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls.
