Since the launch of its television universe, Marvel Studios has released over a dozen live-action and animated series, but only a select few have actually come back for more than one season. In fact, there are literally only six shows that have managed to live beyond a single season: Loki, Marvel’s What If…?, Daredevil: Born Again, Wonder Man, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, and X-Men ‘97.
It’s become a truly frustrating trend for fans, especially when so many of the characters from the Marvel Disney+ shows have failed to see their stories continued after in any form. This has given Marvel Studios a bad rap for cancelling shows before they get the chance to truly hit their stride. Thankfully, once Marvel does bet on a show, it does so with confidence, as is evident with X-Men ‘97.
Season 2 is set to drop on Disney+ on July 1, a third season has already been announced, and now it appears that Marvel Studios has handed out an order for a fourth season as well!

X-Men ‘97 season 4 is happening at Disney+
That’s right, X-Men ‘97 season 4 is happening! While Disney+ has not announced an official renewal, executive producer Larry Houston confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that season 4 is happening. In fact, the creative team is already hard at work on season 4 and it seems Disney+ is working hard to make sure the next several seasons release within a year of one another.
"They want everyone to know it's only gonna be a year now between seasons, not two-and-a-quarter years. It's gonna be a year until the next one and a year until the next one [after that]. They are on schedule now. One of the reasons they're on schedule is we've gone over, given notes on, responded to not only all the scripts for season 3, all the animatics for season 3, we are in season 4 giving script notes. So that's how deep they are into the development."
What is interesting is that Marvel and Disney+ apparently issued a commitment to four seasons for X-Men ‘97 initially, and they intend on following through with that four-season plan. What will be interesting to see is whether the show will go beyond that initial four-season commitment.
The original series ran for five seasons, and when the show ended, it certainly felt as though there was more story to tell, which X-Men ‘97 has proven was the case.
Given how uncertain the future of most Marvel shows is, with only Daredevil: Born Again, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, and Wonder Man in active development on new seasons, it’s certainly a relief to know that X-Men ‘97 is a top priority for Disney+ and Marvel. Knowing that we’re going to get at least four seasons of the show is definitely exciting, as is the plan to release seasons annually moving forward to cut back on the break between seasons.
Knowing that a four-season plan was mapped out, it's great to know that Marvel is also going to give the show's creative team the chance to finish out the initial story planned for the show. This is something that not every show gets to do, so knowing that Marvel is working on season 4 of X-Men '97 is definitely exciting news.
If Marvel is able to achieve its plan to release seasons annually, we should see X-Men '97 release sometime in 2028 after the release of season 3 in 2027.
