The world is ready for Avengers: Doomsday. Yes, it's been a long time coming as the movie once known as Avengers 5 and Avengers: The Kang Dynasty underwent some extensive reworks and rewrites. But the Marvel Cinematic Universe extravaganza is just months away, with fans all over the world literally counting down the days until its arrival. And we really don't have all that long to go before its release.
The upcoming MCU film will kickstart the end of the Multiverse Saga, bringing in Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom to engineer that. The long-awaited debut of the legendary Marvel Comics villain has been one of the reasons why Avengers: Doomsday is so highly-anticipated and, despite the multiversal surprise of the villain looking like Tony Stark, Marvel Studios has made it clear that the MCU iteration will honor his comic book counterpart in at least one major way.
Avengers: Doomsday trailer confirms Reed and Sue's past with Doom
The new Avengers: Doomsday trailer is undoubtedly one of the most haunting pieces of content that Marvel Studios has ever produced. Initially screened at San Diego Comic-Con exclusively for audiences and then widely released at D23, the clip focuses heavily on Victor von Doom, showing us all why he is such a force to be reckoned with. It has a lot of heavy-lifting to do as Doom has not had a Thanos-like slow build but it succeeds in its objective: Doom is not to be trifled with.
However, the trailer also confirms that the villain will have a history with Reed Richards and Sue Storm (a.k.a. Mr. Fantastic and the Invisible Woman) and perhaps even the whole Fantastic Four team. Before we go on, watch the trailer below and see for yourself:
This essentially confirms that Doom will originate from the Fantastic Four's universe, and therefore explain why we haven't even heard his name mentioned in the main MCU Earth-616 (which was focused on highlighting Kang the Conqueror as the potential main villain of the Multiverse Saga). It's a good way of writing around the mid-Saga replacement of Kang as the primary villain while also allowing Doom to have some kind of interconnected history at least a few of Avengers: Doomsday's main heroes.
Doom will seemingly destroy worlds in Avengers: Doomsday
Sue Storm can be heard telling the Avengers and the X-Men about Victor von Doom's past and his relationship, claiming that he used to be kind, and generous. She also reaffirms that he is brilliant, which will undoubtedly make him a force to be reckoned with as incursions threaten the multiverse itself. Through it all, however, she refers to him as "Victor" - as does Reed Richards when he asks the villain what he has seemingly done - against a backdrop of a destroyed city.
The villain coldly stares back at Mr. Fantastic, implying that he has wiped out the world before them (which fans are convinced may well be the world that Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man lives in), and that will make this inevitable betrayal of sorts all the more emotional. It does the heavy-lifting that the MCU's Multiverse Saga wasn't able to do because of the switcheroo and ensures that any attacks from Doctor Doom himself will be full of gravity.
The notion of Doctor Doom coming from the Fantastic Four's world isn't all that surprising. 2025's The Fantastic Four: First Steps featured the first official appearance of the villain, who surfaced in the post-credits scene and seemingly took an interest in Franklin Richards - the son of Sue and Reed. Although we didn't see Doom's unmasked face, it was subsequently confirmed that Robert Downey Jr. filmed that scene on the set of Avengers: Doomsday, confirming that the Fantastic Four's Doom is indeed the same one that will launch an attack on the Avengers in the upcoming movie.
Doctor Doom is the Fantastic Four's archenemy in the Marvel Comics, having a long, dark past with Marvel's First Family. It's only fitting that the quartet of superheroes will have the same relationship with the villain here, undoubtedly ensuring that Avengers: Doomsday will be an emotional rollercoaster for all involved.
