As wild as it is to say, we can finally say it: Avengers: Doomsday comes out next month. It's been the Marvel project on the horizon for days, weeks, months, and years, that it's just never felt like it would ever truly arrive. And here we are, weeks away from that release. Doctor Doom is ready for his close-up, we are more than ready to see him in action. But one group of people who aren't ready for the next Big Bad of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are Earth's Mightiest Heroes themselves.

The Avengers take center stage in a brand new teaser trailer for the upcoming MCU film, which references one of the biggest talking points of the Multiverse Saga, as well as the biggest return in the movie. It also confirms that one hero will no longer be using their signature mantle, replaced by their successor.

Marvel's "Captain Americas" trailer confirms that there is only one in Avengers: Doomsday

Marvel's newest teaser trailer for Avengers: Doomsday focuses heavily on the returning Steve Rogers. Portrayed by Chris Evans, he has been a regular staple of the MCU since the very beginning, wielding the iconic shield all the way back in 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger right through to 2019's Avengers: Endgame. Now, he returns to battle Doctor Doom in the upcoming movie but - contrary to a lot of discussion - he won't be doing so as Captain America.

Watch the trailer below:

As the clip showcases, Steve's return is a big focus as it reveals some of his interactions with Thor and the rest of the Avengers. Scott Lang, a.k.a. Ant-Man, on instinct, refers to his old friend as "Cap" - it was a long-running bit in the Infinity Saga that recurred across films such as 2016's Captain America: Civil War, 2018's Ant-Man and the Wasp, and 2019's Avengers: Endgame during which Scott eagerly referred to Steve as "Cap" to highlight his loyalty (and glee of fighting alongside Captain America). Here, however, it leads to an awkward moment.

Upon saying "Right, Cap?", he receives a glance from the new Captain America himself, Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie). Steve also looks at Ant-Man, as the hero attempts to correct the comment, by looking at Sam to say "Right, Cap?" only for John Walker (Wyatt Russell) - who the US government attempted to install as Steve's replacement - interrupted "I was also Cap... for a minute". Ant-Man then corrects himself again, referring to them all as "Captains America".

While the moment is played for laughs - a decision which has received a mixed response from fans considering that Sam is the definitive Cap of this movie - it does quietly confirm that Sam is officially Captain America. Despite his clumsiness, Scott redirects the question from Steve to Sam, reiterating that there is only one Cap right now, and it isn't Steve Rogers. Yes, Walker's interjection and the overall conclusion of the joke undermines the point, but the clip does definitively remind you that Steve isn't the Star-Spangled Man anymore.

Steve doesn't respond to Scott's "Cap" reference. He also doesn't sport his signature Captain America uniform in the movie nor does he use the iconic Captain America shield, opting to wear a black T-shirt and jeans while wielding Thor's hammer Mjolnir again instead.

Steve relinquished the Captain America mantle in the closing moments of Avengers: Endgame when he gave the shield to Sam. Having lived a life of service, the original Cap decided to use the Infinity Stones to go back in time to live happily ever after with Peggy Carter. And with that, he selected Sam as his successor, knowing that he was what the MCU needed going forward.

Although the US government tried to decree their own "next Captain America" (Walker), Sam definitively proved himself as the official Cap in both The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Captain America: Brave New World. The world now knows that he is the Star-Spangled Man and so do the Avengers.

Avengers: Doomsday arrives in movie theaters on December 18, 2026.
