Marvel "confirms" original Disney Plus show will return for second season
Marvel Studios has been in the business of dominating the silver screen for the past 16 years. In the past four, however, it has turned its attention to the small one, too. The Disney Plus streaming service allowed Kevin Feige and all involved in Hollywood's biggest franchise to tell stories on television, and they wasted little time in producing bangers with the Emmy-winning WandaVision. That was followed by The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, What If...?, and Hawkeye, which made for an incredible first year of TV from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
There have been multiple highs and lows since (and not just on the small screen), with some of the shows not engaging viewers in the way that those aforementioned ones did. And it has all led to Marvel attempting to alter its release strategy, with reports that the studio may end up renewing some of the shows it had originally envisioned as miniseries (and potentially even cancelling some of the others).
After a number of rumors about one show in particular, Marvel just made an announcement that has fans convinced supports those rumors. Could one of the original MCU shows be set to make a comeback?
Marvel may have just confirmed Hawkeye season 2
Hawkeye season 2 may be happening after all. Marvel Studios have recently announced that both the first season of the show and Loki season 2 are the next MCU Disney Plus shows to get released on 4K UHD discs, and they have billed the former as Hawkeye: The Complete First Season. And that has led to a ton of speculation that the rumors of that long-awaited second season are true.
This is particularly notable because the release of WandaVision was billed as The Complete Series, so if Marvel didn't plan on making another season of Hawkeye surely that would have been billed as the complete series - especially since Hawkeye's festive setting gives off Christmas Special vibes. And yet, The Complete First Season triumphantly stands on the beautiful artwork on that SteelBook case.
Earlier this year, reports surfaced that claimed a second season of the show was in development. It initially surprised fans because Hawkeye was one of the shows that actually worked as a miniseries, delivering in its purpose to give Jeremy Renner's Clint Barton one last adventure while also introducing Hailee Steinfeld's Kate Bishop as his successor. It was a satisfying ending that created story opportunities for other parts of the MCU (such as Maya Lopez and the Kingpin's return in spinoff Echo and Kate Bishop's eventual journey to the Young Avengers).
All that being said, there is plenty of opportunity for a sophomore outing. Kate Bishop was received extremely well by audiences and the buddy comedy vibes that Hawkeye was full of are largely responsible for making it one of the MCU's most pleasant surprises ever. It really worked, and it is a concept used very well on network television, so there is no reason that Marvel couldn't make it work on streaming TV.
Hawkeye was likely much cheaper to produce than a show like Loki or Secret Invasion, so it would make sense if that was one of the projects that Marvel decided to revisit. Whether or not it happens remains to be seen, but it's also worth pointing out that the other title that is rumored to be getting a long-awaited second season is Moon Knight and its 4K UHD release was also billed as The Complete First Season. Given that Loki was obviously billed the same way (as we knew a second season was coming at the time), this certainly adds weight to the rumors that the shows may return in the near future.
Fans are eagerly awaiting confirmation from Marvel Studios, but as far as they are concerned, this Hawkeye season 1 announcement is all but the confirmation they need. Should they be getting ready to draw back their bows once again? It's certainly possible!
