Marvel Studios brought a lot of change to the Marvel Cinematic Universe throughout the Multiverse Saga. It wasn't surprising as the franchise had to find a way to move on from its critically-acclaimed Infinity Saga, especially after Avengers: Endgame changed the landscape of the MCU entirely, but a lot of those changes did produce some mixed results - which resulted in even more change as the studio attempted to reset things and pull back on some of those mistakes.
The result of that is some particular characters getting lost in the shuffle. That includes some characters that the franchise was clearly investing in a great deal now getting pushed into the background in favor of more obviously popular superheroes. And yet, while we are absolutely sure that there are some Multiverse Saga characters who will never return to the MCU, this doesn't rule out a return for all of them.
Eternals will reportedly return in the Mutants Era's next big MCU crossover
According to industry insider James Mack, the Eternals will return to the MCU in the next saga. Replying to a fan on social media about whether we will ever see the Multiverse Saga's big group of ancient heroes in the franchise again, the scooper responded "The first crossover event of the next saga will involve the Eternals, bro". And that has very quickly led to a lot of fan speculation as to how they could return.
The Eternals were one of the first big new groups of heroes to make their presence felt on the MCU. After the Infinity Saga closed out, Marvel Studios sought to wipe the slate clean by introducing new faces through its various films at the beginning of the Multiverse Saga. Black Widow gave us Yelena Belova, Shang-Chi And The Legend of the Ten Rings gave us the titular hero, and Eternals gave us the Celestials; an ancient group of gifted warriors tasked with watching humanity from afar by Arishem and yet never interfering (which would explain why they sat out the events of The Blip).
Unfortunately, Eternals missed the mark for many, earning the first real mixed reviews for an MCU movie. Its star-studded cast and incredibly ambitious visual effects also meant that it underperformed at the box office, immediately throwing the characters' fates into question. Despite its epic cast, interesting stories, and cliffhanger endings, Marvel has not moved forward with any of Eternals' storylines in five years. Even Blade's uncredited cameo has yet to be explored. Moreover, a planned sequel for the Eternals characters was cancelled in the years that came after that release.
And yet, this new report would suggest that Marvel is currently working on a way to reintegrating them back into the MCU. With the Multiverse Saga concluding with both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, it's clear that the studio didn't find a way to involve them in their reworked plans for the Multiverse Saga, but perhaps the Mutants Era will be different.
Yes, the next saga is set to be all about the X-Men, with Jake Schreier's long-awaited, highly-anticipated X-Men reboot kicking things off in May 2028. Right now, it's unclear as to whether the Avengers will stick around (and whether they will remain as front and center as they currently are in the franchise now, but it is likely that there will be another massive crossover movie to bring the worlds of the X-Men and the MCU together at some point.
The question is: Will the Eternals be a part of it? It's possible - especially since there are already rumors that the MCU will adapt Marvel Comics' A.X.E.: Judgment Day storyline (a.k.a. Avengers/X-Men/Eternals: Judgment Day). Honestly, I hope this turns out to be the case - because despite the flaws of the Eternals movie, there were a lot of genuinely interesting plot threads that got left hanging. In a franchise as larger-than-life as Marvel's MCU - one that loves deeply-entrenched, epic storytelling - it wouldn't make sense to simply ignore them. If anything, the Eternals deserve a conclusion.
