2026 has been a pretty pivotal year for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as multiple long-awaited projects either have come - or are coming - to fruition. But it will also be remembered as the year that Marvel Studios started looking forward, beyond Avengers: Doomsday and the Multiverse Saga in general.
San Diego Comic-Con was the moment in which it all happened, as the studio's own president Kevin Feige teased fans with 2028's upcoming titles. The X-Men dominated the headlines in the days after that while core MCU fans were also excited about Black Panther 3. Somewhere between both of those is Ghost Rider - one of the most interesting projects Marvel has tackled in some time. And now as it grows nearer, it has gotten the perfect production update.
Ghost Rider gets the perfect working title
It seems as if Ghost Rider has landed itself a working title, and honestly it couldn't be more accurate. According to The Cosmic Circus, the film's working title will be Drive-Thru, with "Throttle Productions LLC" attached to the production. Yep, you can definitely see the Ghost Rider references there.
The Spirit Of Vengeance is renowned for his iconic motorcycle, which he chases his victims on through the darkness. It's probably the second-most intimidating thing about the character - second only to that flaming skull head of his. Needless to say, Drive-Thru really captures part of the very essence of the character.
Ghost Rider has long-been one of the characters from the Marvel Comics that fans have wanted to see in the MCU for years. Outside of the X-Men, he may have been the most sought-after character post-Multiverse Saga. While it has been rumored that Marvel Studios has been working on a movie for the character for sometime now, the announcement from Kevin Feige at San Diego Comic-Con surprised everyone. Better than that, the fact that Ryan Gosling is set to play the character after campaigning for the role is just, as the kids say, chef's kiss!

It's been clear for sometime now that Marvel has a long-term goal to introduce more supernatural, unearthly characters into the MCU. The Multiverse Saga opened those doors through projects like TV series Moon Knight and Disney Plus Special Presentation Werewolf by Night but it didn't follow through with those plot threads due to the criticism aimed at the franchise's overall directonless at the time.
Nevertheless, the hope was that it was all building towards a Midnight Sons movie that would eventually cross over all of those supernatural characters. Yes, that would include Moon Knight, Werewolf by Night, and indeed Ghost Rider. So when the studio went ahead and announced a Ghost Rider solo movie as one of the first chapters of what is expected to be the Mutants Saga, fans were shocked.
But it was a good kind of shock. MCU fans have longed for Ghost Rider in the MCU and Gosling has longed to play this role. It's long overdue at this point, and yet completely unexpected. And it also leans into those rumors that the supernatural entities within the MCU will play a secondary role to the X-Men in the aforementioned Mutants Saga, allowing Marvel Studios to finally give them the focus we have all been waiting for them to get.
It's time to get drive-thru, because Ghost Rider is on its way!
Ghost Rider arrives in movie theaters on July 28, 2028.
