When it comes to its live-action Disney+ original series, Marvel Studios has had varied success since the MCU expanded into the world of television. Sure there have been some misses, but overall, Marvel has a pretty stellar track record when it comes to its original series.
Despite the success its shows have enjoyed and the positive reception among fans, Marvel Studios hasn’t exactly been generous in handing out renewal orders to its shows. In fact, the only live-action Disney+ series that has come back for more than one season has been Loki which returned for a second season and now seems unlikely to return for a third.
Rather than giving out second seasons, Marvel Studios has instead tried to hide under the guise of shows being designed as “limited series.” This is what we’ve seen with several series including WandaVision, which competed as a limited series at the 2021 Emmys where it won three Emmys and was nominated for 23 Emmys – a record for a Marvel series.
Then there is Agatha All Along.
Going into the show, all signs seemed to indicate the show was viewed as a limited series with no plans of a second season with the show described as being the second part of a three-part chapter in the MCU which began with WandaVision and would conclude with Marvel’s Vision series. We had come to the conclusion that we shouldn’t get our hopes up for a second season of Agatha All Along; however, it seems Marvel is apparently planning another season of the hit series!
Agatha All Along season 2 might actually happen
While Marvel has yet to announce a renewal for Agatha All Along, Marvel Studios might have tipped its hand when it decided to submit the show in the comedy categories for the upcoming awards season and not in the limited series categories. This is major because if there were no plans for a second season, the show would have to compete as a limited series per the regulations in place.
As Variety noted when breaking the news of Marvel’s decision, this decision to submit Agatha All Along as a comedy and not as a limited series suggests that a second season is not out of the question. In fact, it seems to suggest that there are plans in place for at least one more season.
Where things get even more interesting is that Variety notes that in order to submit Agatha All Along as a comedy, Disney would have had to prove to the TV Academy that additional seasons are planned or make an official announcement. FX had to do the same thing when submitting Shogun as a drama series and the limited series was later renewed for two additional seasons.
This all goes to say that there seems to be a really great chance that Disney took notice of Agatha All Along’s smashing success and decided they wanted to continue the story via another season of the show rather than in other Marvel projects. And this would make complete sense.
What’s even more interesting is that the official WandaVision account as well as Joe Locke’s official account both shared posts hinting there was more story to be told following the season finale which aired on Oct. 30.
Warning Spoilers coming.
In the season finale, Billy manages to successfully find a body for Tommy’s soul and the show ends with Billy and Spirit Agatha preparing to set out to find Tommy. This ending hinted that the story of Agatha All Along wasn’t quite complete and there could perhaps be more story to be told. The thought was this journey would unfold in another Marvel project, but it now seems possible that Marvel is preparing to incorporate the story into a second season of Agatha All Along.
Honestly, this seems like the smarter play as fans would love to see more of Billy and Agatha’s dynamic unfold on screen and it would make more sense for the pair to embark to find Tommy and deal with the fallout in a second season of Agatha All Along rather than trying to shoehorn the story into another project. And who wouldn’t want more of Kathryn Hahn and Joe Locke together on screen?!
Of course, we’ll have to wait for official confirmation that Agatha All Along season 2 is happening, but the odds seem to be looking good that the show could become the second Marvel series to return for a second season!
