Are you in Avengers: Doomsday? It's the question that so many stars of Marvel movies' past have had to deny in recent weeks, months, and even years as anticipation continues to build for the cinematic phenomenon. See, the upcoming film is set to bring together stars from across the Marvel Cinematic Universe's multiverse, meaning that we will see stars from the MCU franchise itself, as well as stars from the films that predate it. Simply put: Anything is possible.
We do know that the film will feature the returning Robert Downey Jr. as new villain Doctor Doom, while also spotlighting the cast and characters from Fox's X-Men movie series. There will be stars from the MCU's past, present, and future, including the casts of Thunderbolts* and The Fantastic Four: First Steps. And, despite a massive cast that is confirmed to feature at least 30 familiar faces, there will be some surprises.
Unfortunately, there is one star who has confirmed that he won't be back.
Andrew Garfield confirms that he won't be in Avengers: Doomsday
Don't be expecting to see Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man back in the MCU anytime soon. The actor recently spoke to Variety on the red carpet at the Los Angeles premiere for The Uprising and he was asked outright as to whether he would be appearing in Avengers: Doomsday. The answer? A disappointing no.
"No. No I'm not," he told the outlet with a laugh, repeating "I'm not. I'm not" multiple times with a grin. Reminded that he has a reputation for claiming that he is not in Marvel movies only to appear in said Marvel movies, he added: "Yeah. So you'll find out I suppose. One way or the other."

Garfield is, of course, best known to Marvel fans for portraying the titular hero in Marc Webb's 2012 film The Amazing Spider-Man before reprising the role in 2014 sequel The Amazing Spider-Man 2. While his performance was praised, the franchise received mixed reviews for retreading the origin story relatively soon after the Tobey Maguire movies and suffering the same mistakes as the third of those films, stuffing too many villains into its sequel.
Garfield did make a long-awaited, long overdue, and highly well-received comeback to the character in 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home, which saw him share the screen with Maguire's Spidey as well as the MCU's current webslinger Tom Holland. It was a moment in time that brought the three cinematic Spideys to the silver screen for the first time ever and received widespread acclaim as one of the greatest Marvel movie experiences of all time.
However, it was also that movie that gave Garfield his "I'm not in that movie" reputation. For months leading up to the film's release, there was a lot of speculation that he and Maguire would reprise their roles as their respective Spider-Men and the actor was asked about it a lot - expertly denying it each and every time. He did such a good, convincing job that even the most devoted of fans began to doubt the rumors, reports, and apparent set photos that said otherwise. So, when he genuinely did return as his version of Peter Parker in the 2021 film, movie theater audiences went absolutely wild with excitement.
Will it happen again in Avengers: Doomsday? That's the million dollar question, but Garfield is likely telling the truth here. For starters, he vehemently denied involvement in Holland's most recent Spidey film Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and those statements turned out to be 100% true. There were no lies or misdirects; he simply wasn't in it.
There have been reports that Garfield will return to the MCU in the not-too-distant future as the heroes and villains of the Marvel Multiverse are expected to battle Doctor Doom in a bid to prevent their worlds from suffering through an incursion. But the Multiverse Saga's two-part culmination is expected to spotlight specific heroes early on, perhaps switching gears to different ones in the second.
And with that in mind, while Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man is expected to make a cameo appearance in Avengers: Doomsday, Garfield's Spidey is rumored to be involved in 2027's sequel Avengers: Secret Wars.
Avengers: Doomsday arrives in movie theaters on December 18, 2026.
