Marvel makes the Storm announcement we've all been waiting for

Marvel Comics’ X-Men: Hellfire Vigil was full of happy moments, but none of them compared to Storm finding out she was going to have a baby in the future.

The X-Men: Hellfire Vigil was the first big collaboration of writers and artists for the X-Men in years, and there was no way this wasn’t going to have some big moments. Those big moments ranged from the small and happy - like Ransom of the Outliers (from Gail Simone’s Uncanny X-Men) and Temper (Jed MacKay’s X-Men) going on a date - to big, cgame-changing ones - like the new villains, 3K, making their presence known. We even learn that Kamala Khan (Ms. Marvel) told her family she was a mutant.

As amazing as all of that was, nothing compared to Storm finding out she was having a child.

X-Men: Hellfire Vigil creative team

  • Writers: Murewa Ayodele, Eve Ewing, Collin Kelly, Jackson Lanzing, Jason Loo, Jed Mackay, Alex Paknadel, Stephanie Phillips, Gail Simone, and Geoffrey Thorne
  • Artists: Netho Diaz, Javier Garron, Federica Mancin, Roi Mercado, Sara Pichelli, Declan Shalvey, Marcus To, Luciano Vecchio

The best part about this is the way the creative team of writer Murewa Ayodele and artist Luciano Vecchio set this up. First, you see Storm smiling because she says she is going to be a mother. Then, we see her crying in a tub because her pregnancy test came back negative. Later in the issue, Eternity steps in.

Eternity gives Ororo a glimpse of the future because they refuse to have their host lose hope in a future worth fighting for. So, they show a future, and she has a daughter. Her name is Furaha, she has her mother’s powers and her father’s black hair and fangs.

As a fan of Storm, this was incredible news. If there’s anyone in the comic books who would make an excellent mother, it’s Storm. She’s a compassionate but stern mother figure who's cared for, taught, and protected mutant children since she became an X-Man. A perfect example of this is Kitty Pryde, who grew up to be a strong and determined woman and leader. However, Ororo didn’t do it alone. The possible father of Furaha helped. If we’re going by the clues of Furaha’s fangs and black hair, Logan may be the dad.

Back in issue No. 6 of Storm, Logan and Ororo had another fling. They’ve never hidden their love for each other because, besides not having anything to hide, their love for each other is obvious. So much so that after she and T’Challa got divorced, he asked her not to date him (she did).

Now, judging by the failed pregnancy test, Logan and Storm's last night of passion wasn’t the night of conception. That either means either they’ll get intimate again in the future, or Logan isn’t the father. Don’t forget, Storm is on the Avengers with T’Challa, and he’s been drawn with fangs too.

Unfortunately, there’s one more thing to remember. Eternity does what it must to keep the universe going. The future shown could have been a lie or an alternate reality to keep Storm fighting. If that happens, it could become one of the most frustrating moments in X-Men history. Considering their past, that says a lot.
