Marvel's next big video game will be released sooner than anyone expected

While superhero fans assumed the next big Marvel video game wouldn't arrive until 2026, a surprise reveal at Summer Game Fest proved us all wrong.

The Marvel Universe is an expansive world that shows no signs of slowing down, regardless of the medium used to tell its stories. Fans can travel to fantastic kingdoms through comic book pages, witness the superhero fantasy brought to life on the big screen, see their favorite characters take over the small screen, and, of course, battle supervillains for themselves thanks to the video game world. The latter is especially on a hot streak thanks to the release of multiple acclaimed titles such as Marvel's Spider-Man 2 and Marvel Rivals, and even then, the best is still to come.

Marvel recently shocked the world by announcing a brand-new fighting game called Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, which will hit shelves in 2026. As if that wasn't enough, Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra is also expected to be released early next year. But before these two highly anticipated titles arrive, we have one more big adventure to look forward to. The Merc With a Mouth is back, and he's more violent and deadly than ever before.

Deadpool is no stranger to the video game world. The fourth-wall-breaking anti-hero acted as one of the main villains in Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions back in 2010, and even had his own stand-alone title developed by High Moon Studios in 2013. He's also made numerous appearances in iconic Marvel games such as Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, Marvel's Midnight Suns, and more. But if that wasn't enough, then it's time for a brand new chapter.

Marvel's Deadpool VR will be released in late 2025

Announced during Summer Game Fest 2025, Deadpool VR will arrive exclusively on Meta Quest 3 in late 2025. Neil Patrick Harris will put the "mouth" in "Merc With a Mouth" by voicing the beloved Marvel character. From the reveal trailer alone, we can already tell the How I Met Your Mother star was born for the role (fun fact: he also voiced Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions and Spider-Man: The New Animated Series).

Players will get access to a big arsenal of weapons, which includes Deadpool's ever-trusting katanas, handguns, shotguns, and even a grappling hook. More characters from the Marvel Universe will also make an appearance, as Mephisto can be seen in the reveal trailer. Furthermore, the fourth wall-breaking humor we've come to expect from Deadpool is definitely present in this VR adventure. Wade Wilson said it best: "Spider-Man gets Insomniac, and I get this s**t?". But if that wasn't enough, it seems many more surprises are in store as revealed by the game's official description:

"Marvel’s Deadpool VR features an all-new original story. After being pulled through a portal to Mojoworld, Deadpool sees a chance to get rich—like really rich. He signs a sketchy contract without reading any of the fine print and then it’s off to visit a bunch of locations from across the Marvel Universe, battling against iconic (and not-so-iconic) villains. It’s real metaverse stuff—in the Marvel Universe sense, not the VR one."

Superheroes and VR games have gotten along really well in the past. Granted, Batman: Arkham VR wasn't that well received, but the Caped Crusader got a second chance in the VR world courtesy of Batman: Arkham Shadow, which was released to critical acclaim. Furthermore, Iron Man VR made waves for its fun, addictive gameplay loop. So, with a bit of luck, the Merc With a Mouth will also join the ranks of these beloved titles later this year.

With so little time left until its release, it won't be long before we see more of Deadpool VR. Gamescom 2025—which will take place from August 20 to August 24—could very well surprise us with a brand new trailer of Marvel's next big video game. Hopefully, it will showcase even more madness (in the good sense of the word).
