During the Game Awards 2023, Marvel and Bethesda announced Marvel's Blade, a third-person action-adventure video game that will put players in the shoes of the world's greatest vampire hunter. The iconic anti-hero will have to fight no shortage of unimaginable horrors in a quarantined and vampire-infested section of Paris. The initial reveal was met with excitement from fans, especially since developer Arkane Lyon—the mastermind behind projects like Dishonored and Deathloop—is the main developer on this upcoming adventure.
Unfortunately, that excitement quickly turned into worry. Years went by, and neither Bethesda nor Marvel gave any more updates on the game. To make matters more complicated, Xbox announced it would undergo an internal restructuring on Jul. 16, 2026. As part of the publisher's many changes, it would part ways with Arkane Studios. This put the fate of Marvel's Blade in question, and while we have yet to get an official confirmation of whether the game will see the light of day, the future is looking very promising.
Multiple companies have reportedly offered to buy Arkane Studios, and any deal would allow Marvel's Blade to be published
According to a report by Bloomberg, multiple studios have offered to purchase Arkane Studios, including Ubisoft. Moreover, Xbox has also considered selling the studio to Arkane's management so that it could operate as an independent company. But regardless of the path the studio decides to follow, any deal will result in the eventual publication of Marvel's Blade.
The biggest factor to take into consideration is that Arkane Studios has a deadline to find a new home. Initially, Microsoft gave Arkane until Nov. 13, 2026, to find a new buyer. Otherwise, the developer would be permanently shut down, and Marvel's Blade would be axed. Fortunately, the date was extended by a month, so we should learn about the fate of the studio before Dec. 13, 2026.
Bloomberg's report also revealed that Marvel's Blade is expected to be released within one to two years. Moreover, an Arkane Studios union representative stated that the game is "nearing the end" of production, as reported by the French newspaper Le Monde. If development continues on Marvel's Blade, then chances are that we'd get our first official look at the game in 2027.
Interestingly, it appears one of the reasons why the game has spent so long in development is because of Microsoft itself. An Arkane Studios union representative recently revealed that Xbox didn't allow the developers to hire new talent, which in turn caused internal delays:
"After freezing hiring for 19 months, which artificially caused delays and additional costs, Microsoft now uses those same delays and additional costs as a reason to close down the studio. And that is even before talking about financial resources: how not to be a 'cost centre' when our previous games, which combined have sold tens of millions, aren't anywhere to be found in the company's results? (...) Arkane is profitable. Just not profitable enough for Microsoft."
Moreover, it was also revealed that Arkane Studios is looking for a buyer that can support the studio past the release of Marvel's Blade. And if no offer adheres to this principle, then the developer will be shut down:
"We want to finish Blade and release it to the players, as well as the many games the future holds for Arkane. This is our dearest wish. But let's not deny what we know is real: we want a future for the studio that goes beyond Blade (...) If no solid offer is on the table, Arkane will have to close its doors. Doing so would mean to let down 217 workers."
With a bit of luck, it won't be long before we finally discover the fate of both Arkane Lyon and Marvel's Blade. But with multiple offers on the table, it wouldn't be surprising to learn that the iconic studio will live on for many years to come.
