Marvel is reportedly working on a shocking crossover movie no one expected

Big MCU movies like Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars are on the horizon, but a new contender could make them seem like child's play.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe had some very uneven years throughout the course of its Multiverse Saga. Superhero fans were constantly chanting, "We're back!" with the release of films like Deadpool & Wolverine, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Thunderbolts*. However, more uneven projects such as Secret Invasion or Thor: Love and Thunder had the world thinking, "It's so over." As such, the superhero giant is looking to go back to its glory days with its upcoming releases.

2026 will be a big year for the MCU thanks to Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Avengers: Doomsday. Both projects have a lot of excitement and expectations behind them, and they will pave the way to the big premiere of Avengers: Secret Wars, the most ambitious superhero movie ever made.

All eyes are currently on these three movies, yet Marvel might have another ace up its sleeve. Just when we thought the MCU's slate was officially set in stone for the next few years, a surprise crossover could unexpectedly come our way.

The Russo Brothers are reportedly working on another Avengers movie besides Doomsday and Secret Wars

According to renowned and reliable insider Alex Perez (via The Cosmic Circus), Marvel is working on a third Avengers film after Doomsday and Secret Wars. One possibility is that the latter will be split into two parts due to its enormous scope. However, another option is that Marvel is already looking ahead and working on the first big crossover of its next saga:

"I can confirm through sources and evidence provided recently that the Russos have another Avengers film that they’re working on aside from Doomsday and Secret Wars. Based on their statements, there’s a chance it’ll involve splitting Secret Wars into two; however, it could also be the next Avengers installment."

This isn't the first time we've heard about the possibility of Avengers: Secret Wars being split into two parts. Back in January, a different source reported that this option was on the cards, but Marvel was waiting to see what the reception to Doomsday would be like. However, it would be a risky move to green-light a possible third Avengers movie until December, especially when Secret Wars will reportedly start filming in August.

If a new Avengers movie does come our way, the script of Secret Wars would need to be reworked so that it doesn't culminate the multiversal storyline in its entirety. With that in mind, the most likely scenario is that Marvel has already made up its mind and is currently working on a new entry in its Multiverse Saga.

Marvel missed out on its iconic Hall H panel back in 2025, but the studio is looking to make a big return in 2026. It has been heavily speculated that the first Avengers: Doomsday trailer will be publicly unveiled at the event, while rumors suggest that it will also be confirmed that Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man will appear in the upcoming crossover.

If a third Avengers movie is really in the works, then it wouldn't be far-fetched to assume that Marvel could reveal it at this year's SDCC as well. After all, the culmination of the Multiverse Saga isn't far away now, so any big changes to the slate should be announced soon. Granted, that's assuming that the superhero giant won't try to keep this secret project... well, a secret. However, given how much excitement the Avengers movies generate, it's all the more likely that the studio will promote it at any chance it has.

It's important to remember that Kang was originally supposed to be the big bad of the multiverse saga, and it wasn't until a last-minute change that Doom took his place. Marvel hasn't had the chance to properly build its new big villain across multiple projects as it did with Thanos or as it was doing with Kang. As such, extending Doom's storyline across three films could prove to be the right move.

The last Avengers movie came our way seven years ago, so the prospect of having three of them released in quick succession from this year onwards is nothing short of exciting. Hopefully, it won't be long before we really find out what Marvel is working on behind the scenes.

Avengers: Doomsday will be released on Dec. 18, 2026.
