Little is known about what the future holds for the MCU after Avengers: Secret Wars, but the studio could be working on the sequel we've been waiting for.

The hierarchy of power in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is about to change. The superhero giant is gearing up to culminate its ongoing Multiverse Saga with the release of Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. All eyes are on these big crossover projects, and fans eagerly await getting better looks at them with the release of official, full-length trailers.

With excitement levels at an all-time high for the two upcoming adventures of Earth's Mightiest Heroes, it's easy to forget that a new phase and saga are upon us. But let's not forget that Marvel is known for planning films and TV series years in advance.

Very little is known about what the future holds for the MCU after 2027. An X-Men movie helmed by Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier is confirmed to come our way in 2028. Besides that, there are rumors of a third Black Panther movie, a sequel to Thunderbolts*, and a follow-up to The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Unfortunately, these sequels aren't set in stone just yet, but Marvel could surprise us by making them official during this year's San Diego Comic-Con. If that turns out to be the case, then another long-awaited title could also join them, as suggested by a new report.

Marvel is reportedly working on Spider-Man 5

Five may turn out to be the true magic number. According to renowned insider Alex Perez (via The Cosmic Circus), Marvel is already hard at work developing titles for its upcoming saga. The movies being prioritized are: Black Panther 3, Shang-Chi 2, the X-Men, the Thunderbolts* sequel, Blade, Midnight Sons, a new Avengers film, and Spider-Man 5.

As if there were any doubt, it seems we'll see more of Tom Holland's iteration of the wall-crawler for many years to come.

This isn't the first time we've heard about Marvel having big plans for its most popular character. Rumor has it that Spidey has a new trilogy ahead of him, and villains like Venom, Tombstone, the Kingpin, and Hammerhead are set to take the spotlight. To add credibility to this report, Tombstone has been officially confirmed to appear in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. However, Marvel has tried to keep his appearance a secret by refusing to showcase him in any trailers, leading fans to theorize about what his role may be.

There's a chance that Lonnie Lincoln isn't being promoted because he won't have a lot of screen time in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Perhaps he will remain in the shadows for most of the movie, and it won't be until the end that it is revealed that he was the mastermind behind the war that's about to take place in New York. Marvel could merely set up his character for future appearances, suggesting that Spider-Man 5 (and possibly even 6) could really come our way.

To add more fuel to the fire, Tom Holland has stated that he's actively working towards bringing Miles Morales to the MCU. Unfortunately, it's unlikely that such a storyline will happen in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, as the movie is already stacked with many other characters, such as the Punisher, Hulk, Tarantula, Scorpion, Ramrod, Tombstone, the Hand, and possibly even Jean Grey. That being said, the idea that Miles will appear at some point is yet another signal that Marvel intends to add new installments to the wall-crawler's franchise.

Financially, the decision to develop Spider-Man 5 would be a no-brainer. While films like Thunderbolts* and The Fantastic Four: First Steps were incredibly well received by critics, they both had underwhelming box office results. There's no denying that few superheroes are as popular and beloved as the wall-crawler, and that certainly is reflected at the box office.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has already grossed $40 million in pre-sales and is tracking to have a domestic opening weekend of over $250 million. That would mean the film could end its theatrical run grossing over $1 billion in total, which is an impressive feat considering we aren't talking about a superhero crossover movie like The Avengers.

Fans love Tom Holland's portrayal of Spider-Man; the British actor himself has stated he loves to play the character; and Marvel can earn a lot of money producing more Spider-Man movies. So why should the streak stop? Come on, Marvel, make Spider-Man 5 a reality during this year's SDCC (pretty, please).

Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be released on July 31, 2026.
