Spider-Man's endurance through difficult times has been a trademark of the character since his creation back in 1962. He lost his parents before ever getting to spend much time with them; his father figure, Uncle Ben, died because of his irresponsibility; and his first-ever love, Gwen Stacy, perished at the hands of his most dreadful enemy, the Green Goblin. Year after year, Marvel's most iconic hero faces big challenges that take more than they give. But even then, the worst may yet be to come.
The Amazing Spider-Man comic book series as a whole is nearing its monumental one-thousandth issue. So how will Marvel celebrate such an occasion? By giving the wall-crawler a new suit or perhaps new powers? Could he reunite for a brief moment with the real Gwen Stacy, just like happened during the Judgment Day storyline? Well, in true Spider-Man fashion, it seems the friendly neighborhood hero will have to lose someone very close to him yet again.
Aunt May is likely to die in The Amazing Spider-Man (2025) No. 1000
In recent years, we've seen more and more Spider-Man adaptations kill Aunt May. The iconic character died during the final moments of Marvel's Spider-Man for PS4, and she also met her untimely end in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Spider-Man: No Way Home. So if everyone else is doing it, why shouldn't the source material, too?
The very last panel of The Amazing Spider-Man (2025) No. 35 (which precedes the upcoming one-thousandth issue) featured Peter Parker receiving a call informing him that Aunt May had a stroke. Furthermore, her potential passing was also foreshadowed earlier in the story.
The most recent The Amazing Spider-Man (2025) arc revealed that Aunt May had a biological son with Uncle Ben. The hospital made a mistake and informed them that their infant died shortly after he was born. Meanwhile, their child was taken and raised by another family. It wasn't until Cormac Crane grew up and decided to investigate his past that he discovered May was his real mother.
Cormac abruptly entered the Parkers' life, trying to make up for all the years he lost with his mother. Thanks to his family's wealth, he has been buying May countless gifts, taking her to the fanciest restaurants, and giving her tickets to big events. Naturally, this sudden change didn't sit very well with Peter, who started to feel a little jealous of Cormac. After all, Peter used to be the exact opposite. He constantly fled events that were important for May because the city needed saving, and he never had enough money to buy her fancy things.
Throughout the last issues of The Amazing Spider-Man (2025), Peter decided to take a step back and let Aunt May and Cormac share some time together while simply watching from the sidelines. The friendly neighborhood hero dodged May's calls, missed appointments with her and Cormac, and did everything in his power to stay distracted with superhero activities. But as was to be expected, this didn't last long.
May unexpectedly visits Peter at his apartment, and then the two finally get a moment to talk. It is there that Peter admits he's truly happy that May finally has the son she always wanted, and he's simply letting the two bond. However, May replies that Peter is the son she always wanted, and that she will never leave him alone:
"Cormac is my child, yes. And I want to get to know him. But even if we spent the rest of my time on this Earth together, he'd never replace you, Peter. I know that losing the people you love is your biggest fear. Ben, Gwen... you lost your parents before you could crawl. I'm not going anywhere, I promise."
It would be absolutely heartbreaking for May to tell Peter she'll always be there for him, only to perish in the very next issue. But if we know one thing about Spider-Man stories, it is that they tend to treat their titular hero a little too harshly. On the bright side, it won't be long before the mystery comes to an end, as The Amazing Spider-Man (2025) #1000 will be released on Sep. 30, 2026.
