Marvel has been in the business of moviemaking for a very long time, but in the last number of years, it has expanded its net to the small screen too. Thanks to the Disney Plus streaming service, there have been a number of shows set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe entertaining us over the past three years and there are more to come.

From the Emmy-Award-winning WandaVision to its recent spinoff Agatha All Along, there has been plenty of MCU fun on television to enjoy. That also includes the likes of Loki, Moon Knight, Hawkeye, She-Hulk: Attorney At Law and even animated series What If...?.

But this isn't the first time that Marvel Comics characters have headlined TV shows, as there have been multiple live-action shows over the years, as well as countless animated offerings, too. The animated shows in particular stretch back decades.

Unfortunately, one of the many ongoing Marvel shows won't be returning to Disney and Disney Plus for another season.

Marvel's Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur cancelled after two seasons

Marvel's animated series Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur has been cancelled at Disney. The news was first reported by an insider (via the DisneyToon social media account) before it was subsequently confirmed by director Samantha S. Lee, who recently took to social media saying "I love this show and the entire crew... to the moon and back... we made something great".

Storyboard artist Sixiao Tang also took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to acknowledge the show's legacy, saying that "it will always have a special place in [my] heart" as their first revisionist and boarding gig, adding "it's been real moon girl".

Based on the Marvel Comics characters of the same name, the series focuses on Luna Lafayette and her dinosaur friend, who actually goes by Devil Dinosaur. It premiered in February 2023 and ran for 16 episodes until May of that year. It also returned for a second season, which premiered in February of this year and is currently ongoing.

With that in mind, it's important to point out that the series has not concluded yet. The second season is currently on a midseason hiatus but it was recently confirmed that it will return with a batch of new episodes in 2025, which will serve as its final run.

According to DisneyToon, the remaining episodes were initially set to be part of a third season before Disney opted not to move further with the series. As a result, they will be added onto the end of season 2, making the final season significantly longer than its predecessor.

Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur aired on Disney and streamed on Disney Plus five days later. Although it wasn't a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it was still a beloved part of the wider Marvel TV landscape that particularly appealed to younger viewers.

It's a shame that it will end prematurely, but the good news is that it reportedly won't end on a cliffhanger.
