As of September 15, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has earned $936.7 million at the U.S. box office. Spidey passes the previous box office record holder, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which conquered cinemas after releasing in late 2015 and ended its run with an unbelievable $936.66 million domestically. And with that, the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie is now the highest-grossing film of all time in the US.
For comparison, the former champion was Avatar, with $785 million, 6 years earlier, so it was hard to imagine any film topping $900 million, since none had yet made it to the $800 million mark at the time. Now, Brand New Day and The Force Awakens are the only movies to ever reach that milestone. Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: No Way Home also topped Avatar, both landing in the $800 million range.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s accomplishment is truly remarkable, although it should not come as a complete shock. If anything, the surprise came during Brand New Day’s opening weekend, back in July. That is when it surpassed Avengers: Endgame for the best first weekend in US history - $360 million. Brand New Day and Endgame are the only movies to net over $300 million in their opening weekends.
Just to be clear, these numbers strictly refer to the domestic box office (Canada and Puerto Rico are counted along with the United States). On a global scale, Spider-Man: Brand New Day will remain in the number three slot, behind Avatar and Avengers: Endgame. It has raked in over $2.4 billion and even if it does gross $2.5 billion, those two are so far ahead, with Endgame at $2.8 billion and Avatar over $2.9 billion. Furthermore, the former's upcoming re-release (Avengers Endgame: Encore) will likely widen the gap between it and Spider-Man, potentially pushing the 2019 MCU movie even closer to reclaiming the crown from Avatar.
Sticking to domestic earnings, the Marvel Cinematic Universe now comprises half of the top ten movies on the all-time domestic earnings list. They are in bold below:

It is still possible that Spider-Man: Brand New Day could be the first to make it to $950 million, although the insurmountable figure of $1 billion at the U.S. box office will continue its untouchable status, for the time being. However, Marvel fans are hopeful that Avengers: Doomsday could also be one of the biggest movies of all time and is already setting pre-sale records. So, who knows how long it will take for a movie to conquer a billion dollars domestically?
