Marvel pits Spider-Man and the Punisher against each other ahead of Brand New Day

Spider-Man and the Punisher are bound to cross paths in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, but before that, Marvel has pitted them against each other.

These two Marvel characters need no introduction. In one corner, we have Spider-Man, the friendliest hero in the neighborhood and a man who treasures life above anything else. He'll do everything in his power to save even the cruelest of criminals without a second thought. In the other corner, we have the Punisher, an antihero who won't hesitate to kill when the situation calls for it. Frank Castle forever seeks revenge for the death of his family, yet nothing will ever fill that void. These two legends couldn't be any more different, yet they will have no option but to join forces in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

The upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe project will bring together Spidey and the Punisher for the first time in live-action history. Fortunately, we don't have to wait until the film's release to figure out how such an encounter may play out. In anticipation of Brand New Day, Marvel has pitted these street-level characters against each other in an explosive tale with a very tragic outcome.

The Spectacular Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026) comic-book series pits Spidey and the Punisher against each other

Who brings a web-shooter to a gunfight? Peter Parker and Frank Castle weren't exactly on bad terms in The Spectacular Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026). In fact, they both had the very same goal: to put an end to the many criminal empires haunting New York. To achieve this, the wall-crawler pays the Kingpin a not-so-friendly visit and steals the Lexicon of crime in the process, a "secret ledger of every major illegal enterprise in New York City."

The wall-crawler feeds this information to police officer Yuri Watanabe, and the two shut down five major criminal operations in New York within the span of a single week. However, they aren't the only ones trying to hunt the Maggia crime families.

Frank Castle had been scouting one of these raided locations when Spidey and the police struck. It is there that the Punisher acquires the private radio frequency that the friendly neighborhood hero uses to communicate with Yuri and overhears their conversation.

See, the Punisher also wanted to attack these illegal operations, but he had a more "permanent" solution in mind than to send the criminals to prison. As such, he follows Spidey and Yuri to the next destination: a warehouse owned by the one and only Mr. Negative.

Martin Lee was running a big drug operation with the help of his army, the Inner Demons. The wall-crawler planned to take down everyone in the warehouse silently and call the police until it was safe to come in. However, the Punisher made a big, explosive entrance and started to shoot everyone on sight. Unfortunately for Frank, not only are the Inner Demons immortal, but Mr. Negative also used his abilities to corrupt his mind.

As simple as that, the Punisher was "negativized" and started to hunt Spider-Man.

The Spectacular Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026) No. 2 concluded with Frank outright using a helicopter to shoot down a building where the wall-crawler was in. Unfortunately, we'll have to wait until the release of the third issue on Jul. 29, 2026, to find out what happens next.

It seems Marvel is very keen on making Spider-Man and the Punisher a recurring duo. After all, the two will have their own series titled Punisher Vs. Spider-Man. Furthermore, they are stars of the Spider-Man: Long Way Home comic book series alongside the Hulk. To top things off, all three of these iconic characters will share the big screen in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. So, with a bit of luck, they will keep sharing stories for months to come.

The Spectacular Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026) No. 3 will be released on Jul. 29, 2026.
