When it comes to Marvel, it’s incredibly hard to know what to believe. Not only is the rumor mill always running rampant with insiders sharing information about everything from rumored projects to casting moves, but Marvel Studios itself likes to keep audiences in the dark as best it can in order to pull off major moments and prevent spoilers from leaking.
This then extends to the actors and actresses cast within the Marvel Cinematic Universe shows and movies, who are sworn to secrecy. Not only are they unable to talk about the projects outside of the given talking points, but in many instances, they aren’t even allowed to make it known that they’re appearing in a project be it via a debut role or to reprise their role.
Because of this, fans have gotten used to actors within the franchise lying about their futures in the MCU, brushing off rumors and reports about their involvement in projects even when they are under contract.
For these reasons, it’s incredibly hard to know when to take an actor’s word seriously or when to believe the reports of the insiders about their involvement. It’s a vicious cycle and one that once again has fans wondering who to truly believe now that Andrew Garfield is speaking out yet again about his reported return to the MCU.
Fans will recall that Garfield was rumored to reprise his role as Spider-Man in Spider-Man: No Way Home, and he adamantly denied the rumors for months leading up to the film’s release… only to then end up having indeed been part of the cast. Rumors are again swirling that Garfield is set to once again suit up as Spider-Man in Spider-Man 4 and once again, Garfield is attempting to put those rumors to rest.
Andrew Garfield claims he hasn’t signed onto Spider-Man 4
As rumors swirl about his return in the upcoming fourth Tom Holland Spider-Man movie, a movie that is reportedly being packaged as a team-up film similar to Deadpool & Wolverine, Andrew Garfield is again denying his involvement in the project.
“I’m gonna disappoint you,” Garfield told GQ when asked about whether he has indeed signed up for Spider-Man 4. “Yeah, no.”
Funny enough, Garfield knows full well that his words aren’t likely going to be taken seriously by the masses as he joked that “no one’s gonna trust anything I say from now on.” And he’s got a good point.
After Garfield so adamantly denied the claims he was going to be a part of Spider-Man: No Way Home and understandably so as neither Marvel nor Sony wanted that to leak before the film’s release. And when it did, they clearly put the cast in overdrive in trying to shut down the rumors despite there actually being truth to the reports.
It’s possible that Garfield could indeed be telling the truth but it’s also possible he’s dancing around the topic as well. After all, he doesn’t say he’s not coming back or in talks about coming back. He simply noted that he’s not signed on to the film at the moment. Honestly, there’s no real way to know for certain whether we can believe his remarks this time around or whether he could indeed revisit the character once again in the future.
Fans clearly want more of his Spider-Man and we can only hope that if the storyline is right, he’d be open to returning for Spider-Man 4.
