It's safe to say that Marvel fans are nervous about Avengers: Doomsday. The upcoming film will be the beginning of the end for the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Multiverse Saga, which means that it will ultimately decide whether or not it has been a success story. And after some ups and downs throughout the saga itself, it's more imperative than ever that it be successful.
Very little is known about the upcoming MCU project. That's partially because Marvel Studios has a reputation for complete secrecy, which it pulls off incredibly well, but it's also down to the mid-saga pivot involving the central villain. Ushering out Kang the Conqueror and bringing in Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom was a bold move, but it puts more pressure on the movie to succeed - especially as it's the first part of a two-movie story.
Speaking of the two chapters in the Multiverse Saga's conclusion, one MCU star has opened up about the movie, confirming that the stakes will be high... perhaps too high.
Avengers: Doomsday will end on a cliffhanger
Anthony Mackie has confirmed that Avengers: Doomsday will end on a cliffhanger. The Captain America star recently spoke to Collider and dropped that bombshell as he revealed that "no one is safe. Everyone is expendable". And it doesn't take much research to figure out that fans had predicted that this would be the case given that there will be a second movie, and that they were very, very concerned about the fates of their favorite characters.
Released in 2026, Avengers: Doomsday will lead directly into its 2027 sequel Avengers: Secret Wars, meaning that the story of Doctor Doom's reign of terror will continue after the credits roll on the first film. As such, we were all worried that a cliffhanger ending was coming due to the fact that 2018's Avengers: Infinity War led directly into 2019's Avengers: Endgame and it featured one of the most catastrophic cliffhangers in cinema history (as Thanos erased half of the universe, including some of the most beloved MCU characters).

Are some of our favorite Marvel characters going to face a similar fate in Avengers: Doomsday when Doctor Doom tries to remake the multiverse in his image? And just which characters won't make it out alive? Perhaps the most concerning thing about all of this is Will it be reversible in Avengers: Secret Wars? Remember, Endgame saw the Avengers travel through time in a successful bid to bring the vast majority of their loved ones back. Can that be done again, or will the heroes have to find a new way to triumph?
It's going to be difficult for Marvel to try and recreate that feel that Avengers: Infinity War had. The ending of that movie created a sense of shock that had never been seen in any superhero movie before, leaving fans completely despondent after the credits rolled. That also influenced the must-see nature of subsequent movies Ant-Man and the Wasp, Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame - all of which audiences were told would be important to the endgame of the Infinity Saga. Can they successfully replicate that feel for Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.
Mackie is one of the longest-standing actors in the MCU, debuting all the way back in 2014's Captain America: The Winter Soldier. His character, Sam Wilson, took on the superhero persona of The Falcon and became one of Captain America's best friends. But when Steve Rogers retired the shield, he handed Sam the mantle, resulting in him becoming the new Cap. Mackie headlined the most recent MCU installment in 2025's Captain America: Brave New World.
He is now set to reprise that role in both upoming Avengers movies which will likely hav a huge impact on the franchise going forward. We can't wait to see what kind of role Captain America plays and how the films shape the next chapter of the MCU.
