The Punisher's MCU return seemingly confirmed ahead of Avengers: Doomsday

Marvel Comics fans could see one of the most brutal moments from Jonathan Hickman’s Secret Wars in Avengers: Doomsday, and it involves the killer of killers, The Punisher.

Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday could be the most anticipated superhero movie of all time. It’s already breaking records, and it hasn’t even been released yet. Some of it has to do with it being the first Avengers movie since Endgame (not counting Thunderbolts*), the return of Robert Downey Jr., and the debut of Doctor Doom (which could be connected to Ultimates No. 4). Maybe the most exciting of all the news is that there will be a plethora of Marvel characters who will appear in the movie.

For the longest of times, it was rumored that 20th Century Fox’s X-Men would return in the film, even though this was something that many didn’t think was possible. Once it became official when the studio announced the full cast of the Marvel Cinematic Universe film, fans probably started wondering who else would appear. Marvel Studios does a fairly decent job keeping certain secrets unconfirmed. For example, a lot of people speculated that Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire would be in Spider-Man: No Way Home, but it seemed unbelievable until they walked through the portals in the 2021 film.

If you’re a comic book fan and you heard that the events of Avengers: Doomsday may lead to Battleworld, you’re pumped to see where this goes. You know that there will be incursions and some of your favorite heroes and villains won’t make it to Avengers: Secret Wars. Well, according to a new report from Marvel scooper James Mack, Jon Bernthal is expected to return as The Punisher in a scene that may well be the reason some of the worst beings in the MCU won’t make it to the next movie.

Secret Wars No. 1 creative team

If you’ve read Secret Wars by Jonathan Hickman, your Spider-Sense probably started tingling because you know the scene that this Avengers: Doomsday rumor is now referring to. For those who don’t, allow this writer to set the stage.

It’s the end of the world. The Ultimate Universe (Universe-1610) was colliding with Earth Prime (Universe-616). People are dying, buildings are being destroyed, and the heroes on both sides were either fighting or trying to get offworld. Where are the villains? Some of them are at a bar watching the events on TV.

Wilson Fisk sent out an email to various villains to meet at a bar to drink, “at the sight of our enemies’ greatest failure.” They laughed and cheered like the petty people they are. It didn't matter that they were going to die too. It was good enough that their enemies lost. This was on brand for them. However, you know what else is on brand? Frank Castle understanding what’s going on and taking full advantage of the situation.

Punisher shows up with a gun and one of the best lines in comic book history. “Gentlemen. They say that when you die, you can’t take it with you. Which begs the question: Exactly what am I gonna do with all these bullets?”

If this scene happens in Avengers: Doomsday, it could be the most talked-about moment for a long time. Not just because the scene will rock. It will show once again that the creators behind the MCU projects care about the comic book fans enough to add moments that will make them happy.
