It's been a minute since we've seen Earth's Mightiest Heroes assemble on the big screen, but at long last, the wait is coming to an end. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is gearing up for the release of Avengers: Doomsday—one of the most ambitious movies to date. Despite the shortcomings that have plagued the Multiverse Saga, the superhero giant is looking to conclude their ongoing phase on a high note. However, the bigger the crossover, the higher the stakes. That's why fans are worried their favorite heroes might not live to fight once again in Avengers: Secret Wars.
The death of Phil Coulson was the reason the Avengers first assembled back in 2012. Quicksilver perished due to Ultron's actions in Age of Ultron, and half of the life in the universe was turned to dust in Infinity War. Last, but certainly not least, Tony Stark and Natasha Romanoff both sacrificed themselves for the greater good in Endgame. Every Avengers movie to date has featured at least one shocking death, and chances are history may repeat itself once again. But in case a historic track record isn't enough to get you worried, maybe the comments of this beloved Marvel star will.
Sebastian Stan teases deaths in Avengers: Doomsday
Marvel hasn't had a proper chance of setting up Doctor Doom's character before their next big crossover, so the villain needs to do something truly despicable to be feared by audiences worldwide... and it looks like that will be the case. The Winter Soldier himself, Sebastian Stan, recently attended Tokyo Comic Con and hinted that some characters won't survive the events to come by stating, "I don't know if I can say very much about [Avengers: Doomsday]. I don't know what's going to happen. We'll see who makes it and who doesn't."
Despite being the biggest MCU projects to date, Avengers: Doomsday is still shrouded in a lot of mystery. Aside from the cast reveal, there's very little information to go by on what's about to happen or who will be in it. Audiences are still awaiting the release of the film's trailer, which is rumored to come out this December. As such, we would truly be in the dark about who might bite the dust... if it wasn't for a few rumors, that is.
Back in May 2025, it was reported that Thor would die in one of the upcoming Avengers movies. However, it was also unveiled that such a tragic moment won't be the end of the road for the God of Thunder. After all, if he perishes in battle, he'd go to Valhalla and reunite with Jane Foster. With that in mind, it wouldn't be too far-fetched to assume that Victor Von Doom might "kill" Thor during the events of Avengers: Doomsday. This would establish the villain as a true force to be reckoned with, and it would allow the iconic hero to have a big comeback moment in Secret Wars.
It has also been reported that Marvel plans for previous villains to make a return in Avengers: Doomsday. Interestingly enough, Disney held a showlight during a merchandise Expo in Shanghai, China, and the footage showcased Doom potentially killing Thanos. To add a bit more fuel to the fire, the actor behind the Mad Titan, Josh Brolin, teased that he'll be back in the MCU during the Avengers movies. Connecting all the pieces together, it's safe to say that not even the bad guys are safe from perishing at Doom's hands.
Newly introduced heroes such as the Fantastic Four, Ms. Marvel, and Wiccan should be completely safe, given that their time in the MCU is just beginning. However, veterans such as Hawkeye, War Machine, Ant-Man, and even Bucky Barnes could very well bite the dust. Hopefully, their deaths won't play out simply for the shock factor, and they manage to go out with a bang. For the time being, one thing is for certain: the MCU is about to undergo a big change, and some faces won't be around for too much longer.
Avengers: Doomsday will be released on Dec. 18, 2026.
