With the end of the year fast approaching, Marvel Studios is laying the groundwork for what is coming in 2025. After a relatively quiet release year for the juggernaut (that consisted of one box-office smashing movie and three Disney Plus shows), the Marvel Cinematic Universe returns to make an impact next year. We have three movies coming from the franchise, with Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts*, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps all set to continue the story of the Multiverse Saga.
But, as always, the stories continue on the small screen too, with Daredevil: Born Again, Ironheart, and Wonder Man all set to make an impact. The first of those has been a long time coming, as audiences are ready to see Charlie Cox return as The Man Without Fear once again. Similarly, Ironheart has been overdue a release date for a long time, so to have it on the horizon is also extremely exciting. And Wonder Man promises to be one of the MCU's most alluring and original titles.
There is also another intriguing Marvel series coming out next year which, up until this point, had not yet been given a release date. That is, until now.
Marvel Zombies gets fall 2025 release date
Disney has confirmed that upcoming animated series Marvel Zombies will be released on Disney Plus on October 3, 2025. Prior to this, Marvel has confirmed to audiences that they could expect the show in October 2025, but it was one of the only titles on the Disney Plus 2025 calendar that had not been given a definitive release date. Now, it has one.
Marvel Zombies promises to be one of Marvel Studios' most unique and creative titles. As the title suggests, it's based on the comic book series of the same name and focuses on a timeline in which so many of the major MCU characters have become zombies. Yes, that makes it MCU-adjacent, because even though it's not canon to the events of the live-action movies, it's based upon them and isn't a completely separate Marvel property.
If that sounds like another MCU animated series, that's because it's supposed to. What If...? was the first animated series Marvel Studios ever produced and it focused on a series of alternate timelines and universes in which the events of the MCU franchise played out a little differently. In fact, Marvel Zombies was spun out of one of the episodes of that show's first season.
"What If... Zombies?!" reimagined the MCU as a zomibified hellscape due to a quantum virus that turned Hank Pym's wife Janet van Dyne into a zombie. Upon returning to the mainland, Hank ended up spreading the virus, taking out the core Avengers extremely quickly and leaving just a few of them to attempt to clean things up. And that proved to be difficult for the likes of Spider-Man, The Wasp, The Winter Soldier, Bruce Banner, Black Panther, and the others.
While the episode itself received mixed reviews from critics, fans responded extremely well to the ambitious adaptation and this eventually led to the Marvel Zombies concept becoming its own series. So, yes, technically the dark show is a spinoff of What If...? and it's set to take the MCU into even darker territory, as the four-episode event has been confirmed to be TV-MA - the third MCU show to hold that rating.
The horrors will persist for the survivors of the Marvel zombie apocalypse. You can see it all unfold on Disney Plus on October 3, 2025.
