The romantic relationship between MJ and Peter Parker came to an end in the Zeb Wells run of Amazing Spider-Man. It was a moment that people hated but had to accept. Well, that’s not true. The internet comic book community took the opportunity to discuss how much they personally hated the decision that the creative team made, the character they created (Paul) and how Marvel Comics hates Spider-Man. It was so bad that I once got bombarded with insults on Twitter for saying that I enjoyed one of Zeb Wells' issues (an opinion that I stand on to this day).
The run of Amazing Spider-Man happened in 2022, and a lot has happened since. MJ became Venom, Paul and Mary Jane broke up (All-New Venom No. 9), and Spider-Man has fought in space and started dating an alien. But the part that made a lot of fans happy was when Paul was killed in Venom No. 256. While I was indifferent about Paul’s existence, seeing the internet react to his death was a weird experience.
After Paul and MJ ended their relationship, it looked like Flash Thompson was going to try to date MJ. He awkwardly flirted with MJ and seemed to always be willing to help her (not in a creepy way), and she seemed to understand and somewhat reciprocate his feelings towards her. However, when she asked if he wanted to be more than friends, he said maybe. That put a stop to anything that could have happened between them.
In Venom No. 258, there is the idea of a Venom and Anti-Venom love story. Some days after Paul’s funeral, MJ and Peter take a long walk in Central Park and talk about their feelings. And while they may start dating soon, there's clearly something there.
Admittedly, I could be jumping the gun. MJ and Peter agreed that they needed to work on their friendship before they could even think about dating again. Plus, it’s unclear what’s going on with Peter and Raelith (his space “girlfriend”). Nevertheless, Venom No. 258 looks like the beginning of Peter and MJ becoming a couple again.
Another point is that No. 1000 of Amazing Spider-Man is right around the corner (scheduled for release in September 2026). Writer Joe Kelly said that a new villain named Ravage will be introduced, but that can’t be the only thing that will happen in this groundbreaking issue of Amazing Spider-Man. It would be the perfect time to bring Marvel Comics’ fans’ favorite couple back. If we’re lucky, the comic will end with Mary Jane telling Peter Parker that he hit the jackpot.
"It's a true honor to have the opportunity to contribute to Spidey's legacy with a huge milestone like this. And a special bonus - we get to introduce a new villain?! Amazing. Ravage is layered and complex and mysterious, and I can't wait to unleash him on the readers with this monumental issue!"
Lastly, Spidey had a talk with Venom. He said that he doesn’t know if it was the symbiote (Venom) or MJ who killed Torment, but he’s keeping an eye on him. MJ heard the conversation, and that suspicion could be something that keeps them apart.
