The Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline is as complex as the flow of time itself. The most expansive franchise to ever grace the screen, it has offered up major events in the past, present, and future as it continues to build out its vivid world. It's now knocking down further walls with its Multiverse Saga, welcoming in both parallel and classic Marvel projects from different studios and times.
From the'40s setting of Captain America: The First Avenger to the upcoming future-set Avengers: Doomsday, the MCU's timeline is full of important dates and milestones. However, there is one date that left a stain on the fan-favorite franchise from which it will never truly recover from. And now, we have reached that date in real life.
November 4 2026 is the exact date that Maria Hill dies in the MCU
Anyone remember Secret Invasion? Don't worry, you aren't alone in trying to forget that one; even Marvel Studios themselves are eager to move on from the ill-fated 2023 Disney Plus series, and you honestly can't blame them for that. But there is one particular event that goes down in the premiere episode of that show that the franchise will never be truly able to shake off - one that took place on the exact date that this article was written.
Yes, November 4 2026 is the exact day in the MCU timeline in which Agent Maria Hill is killed. The controversial event took place in the aforementioned Secret Invasion premiere when she was stabbed by Gravik - the odious Skrull leader who attempted to infiltrate planet Earth to get back at Nick Fury for failing to find them a home. It was a shocker of a conclusion for that episode - and one that fans were so outraged by that they were convinced that it was a fakeout. Unfortunately, Marvel didn't exhibit that outside-the-box thinking here.

Hill's death was the first in a long line of mistakes that Secret Invasion would make - all of which earned it the undisputed title of the "Worst MCU show" of this modern era - and it gets more infuriating as the years go on. While the death scene was effective in highlighting the grittier tone and higher stakes that Secret Invasion wanted to convey, it served no long term purpose and has only harmed the MCU more than anything else.
Agent Hill was a fan-favorite character who had been recurring in the MCU since 2012's The Avengers. Nick Fury's right-hand officer at SHIELD, she would go on to become his most trusted ally, accompanying him on the major missions he was on in the likes of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Infinity War, and Spider-Man: Far From Home. She's a veteran, beloved character - and one of the few stars who appeared in those early Infinity Saga days that could still have appeared in the Multiverse Saga. For one title to take the character off the board like that - in such a violent way - it was completely uncalled for.
Marvel fans loved to see Cobie Smulders pop up every single time that she did, so for the studio to do that to the character - a legacy character - it left a very bad taste in their mouths. And it would only get worse for there for Secret Invasion, which would continue to misstep along the way, killing off Talos, underutilizing Olivia Colman and Emilia Clarke, pulling off a reviled Rhodey skrull twist that they ultimately had to revise with statements afterwards, and bowing out with a critically-panned series finale that left fans completely uninspired about the whole thing.

There is no denying that Secret Invasion is widely considered a low point for not just Marvel TV but the whole MCU in general. The show missed the mark in terms of what it was trying to do but the overall execution made that 1000 times worse, with Hill's death and the other aforementioned issues ultimately turning it into a sore point for Marvel fans.
There is essentially no coming back from this so, if Marvel Studios truly wants to press the reset button with Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, resetting the MCU timeline, then I know we certainly wouldn't mind removing the events of the MCU's November 4 2026 from existence.
Go on Marvel: Bring Maria Hill back!!
