DC Comics’ Absolute Universe has been one of the biggest success stories in comic books in a long time. Creative teams like Kelly Thompson and Hayden Sherman (Absolute Wonder Woman) and Deniz Camp and Javier Rodriguez (Absolute Martian Manhunter) have helped make this initiative one of the most important in the genre. It’s been so lucrative that writer Robert Kirkman says it’s helping the entire comic book industry.
One of the most recognized figures in this universe has been Absolute Batman, who was created by writer Scott Snyder, artist Nick Dragotta, and colorist Frank Martin. At first, it was the massive size of the six-feet-nine-inch-tall, three-hundred-pound Dark Knight. As the series goes on, it becomes clear that the visual of Absolute Bruce Wayne is only part of the appeal.
After almost two years and 21 issues in, the series continues to be a must-read thanks to amazing writing and equally incredible artwork. That’s why it’s not shocking that Absolute Batman is becoming an animated project.
On a social media post (that you can see above), DC Comics announced, "In ABSOLUTE seriousness... the Bat-Symbol is getting even bigger. DC Studios is proud to announce that ABSOLUTE BATMAN is being developed into an original animated series!" This isn’t shocking since the series continues to get second printings and has tons of variants for almost all of the issues (shout out to artist Mark Brooks for his amazing work). The only surprising part is that it took as long as it did.
Superhero shows and movies have been profitable for a while, and there doesn’t seem to be an end in sight. It also helps that Batman is a recognized property. Combine that with the popularity of the Absolute Universe, and you have an almost guaranteed win. However, there are a few more things needed to make certain this is successful.
First and foremost is the animation. Before the initial trailer drops, DC Comics will release images of the project. People will immediately judge that and see how much effort DC Studios is putting into this series. Sadly, that shouldn’t be an indication of how good or bad a project is. Nevertheless, people on social media will judge it.
Second is the voice acting because it can make or break a project before it’s even released. For example, it was clear that Invincible had the best voice acting crew in any animated project. It helped the initial push of the show and was a big reason people tuned in from the first episode and kept watching. The right cast will do the same for Absolute Batman.
Lastly, and most importantly, stay true to the source material. The team that put Absolute Batman together is the reason why this project is happening. Their stories and input will not only help this become successful, but they will also lead to Absolute Wonder Woman, Absolute Superman, and others getting greenlit for animated features.
