All 6 action sequences in Deadpool and Wolverine ranked
After a long wait, Deadpool and Wolverine is finally here! The Marvel Cinematic Universe movie takes audiences on a wild ride filled with unpredictable cameos, heartfelt moments, and the humor we've all come to love and expect from The Merc With a Mouth. But of course, that is just one part of the package. It would not be the same without the violent, bloody, and often funny action scenes that elevate the franchise to a whole new level.
Fortunately, director Shawn Levy put his maximum effort into this aspect of the movie and delivered jaw-dropping fights that won't leave our minds any time soon. Seriously, they are insanely good! However, only one can be crowned as the absolute best. So it's time to discover which one as we rank all six main action sequences in Deadpool & Wolverine! But be warned: there will be MAJOR spoilers past this point.
6. Deadpool vs the TVA (second part)
Let's start with the shorter scene out of the list. This fight picks things up just after the opening fight scene where Deadpool wears Wolverine's claws and looks like he's about to destroy the TVA agents that were hunting him. But while that is partially true, it wasn't with the same grace and style that the Merc With a Mouth was accustomed us to.
As Deadpool himself puts it: "Wolverining is hard". After all, he uses the claws for what feels like thirty seconds, stabs himself with them, clumsily kills about four TVA agents, and then proceeds to use his trustworthy katanas once again. This sequence's only purpose is to bring resolution to a conflict established earlier, rather than to be a flashy fight on its own. But that's absolutely fine. It gets the job done, and it does so while also making us laugh along the way. So extra points have to be given for that.
5. Car fight scene
This is where things get really good.
While Deadpool promised Wolverine the TVA could bring back the fallen X-Men of his universe, that statement turned out to be just an "educated wish". So when Logan finds out he was lied to, he (understandably) gets really angry. What follows is an insanely creative and fun fight scene inside a car while "You're the One that I Want" from Grease plays in the background. Yeah, that really belongs in a Deadpool movie.
Since they're enclosed in such a small space, our titular heroes have to get creative and use numerous elements such as seatbelts and shards of glass to hurt each other. The result is a blood fest between two characters who (usually) can't die. And even if audiences can't see it, the confrontation seems to last until the night comes.
But while this sequence has a lot of points going on for originality, it falls short compared to other fight scenes that are longer, bigger, and better choreographed since they weren't enclosed in such a small space. That's not to say the car fight scene isn't good - it is by all means! It just pales in comparison to the following entries in this list.
4. Deadpool vs the TVA (first part)
Ever since it was announced that a third Deadpool movie would come by the hands of Disney, fans of the franchise got really concerned. After all, the House of Mouse isn't known for making R-rated projects filled with blood and mature jokes. So what better way to bury all of our worries than with this opening sequence?
Wade Wilson's confrontation with the TVA checks every single box. It has great choreography (in both the fight and the dance departments), perfectly sets the mood for all of the events that will follow, and makes audiences laugh from the get-go. Besides, it continues with the franchise's tradition of having kick-ass opening credits.
As if that wasn't enough, it also has an unexpected yet very creative factor. I would've never imagined that Deadpool was going to use Logan's adamantium skeleton to obliterate agents of the TVA, yet here we are! Shawn Levy proved from the opening sequence he was the right choice to direct a Deadpool movie, and audiences immediately knew they were in for something special. All thanks to this one amazing fight scene.
3. Deadpool vs Wolverine (first fight)
Before Deadpool & Wolverine premiered, fans worldwide wanted to see two things out of the movie. First and foremost; a moment where the titular heroes join forces to fight against the bad guys. Secondly, they also wanted to watch the complete opposite in the form of an epic fight between them. Fortunately, we got both.
The moment Logan spits out a bullet and "Hells Bells" from AC/DC plays in the background, you know you're about to witness something extraordinary. Moments such as when Deadpool reloads his guns while the bullet cartridges are mid-air, or when he pulls out his katana by pure inertia, are simply amazing. Fans waited years to see this fight on the big screen, so it could've been extremely easy to be disappointed by the outcome. Fortunately, that wasn't the case.
This fight between two of the most iconic Marvel heroes is raw, fast-paced, and nothing short of amazing. It showcases how good these characters are at hand-to-hand combat, proving why they would work perfectly as a team down the line. Besides, it was literally a dream come true. So it didn't fail to put an ear-to-ear smile on my face the whole way through.
2. The Void confrontation
This is what a superhero tale should be all about; multiple characters from different sagas coming together to stop a greater evil. When I watched X-23, Elektra, Gambit, Blade, Wolverine, and Deadpool fight Cassandra's army of mutants, I couldn't help but feel like a kid playing a Marvel Ultimate Alliance. Back then, video games and animated series were the only way to see so many characters from "disconnected" franchises working together on the screen.
Of course, the MCU is no stranger to big team-ups like the one Deadpool & Wolverine gave us. However, those huge crossovers are usually advertised beforehand. We all expect an Avengers movie to feature many characters sharing the screen. We all knew Captain America: Civil War would see Earth's Mightiest Heroes divided into two teams fighting against each other. Even Spider-Man: No Way Home lost its element of surprise due to the many photos, videos, and concept art that leaked before the movie premiered. However, Deadpool & Wolverine was different.
Marvel somehow managed to keep every surprise appearance of Shawn Levy's movie secret. Sure, insiders did know about most of them. But even then audiences were somewhat skeptical since no photos or videos leaked beforehand - along with the fact that those cameos just sounded too good to be true. So getting to watch this ensemble of characters come together in The Void fight scene was a huge but welcome surprise. Every single hero stole the spotlight at least once, and they all proved why they were such a menace to the TVA in the first place.
On a separate note, Channing Tatum's Gambit was so good in this action scene that I really hope he gets his chance at starring in his own standalone movie. Kevin Feige, if you're somehow reading this, please let it happen.
1. Deadpool & Wolverine finally team up
It all came down to this.
Every single aspect of this sequence is downright amazing. From the slow-motion walk-out of our heroes to "Like a Prayer" from Madonna, to the moment in which Wolverine finally puts his mask on before the fight. This one-shot sequence feels pulled out straight from one of Marvel's best comic books ever made. Besides it's also choreographed and directed to perfection.
This is what audiences wanted from a Deadpool and Wolverine movie. After spending much time disagreeing and fighting against each other, our titular heroes finally join forces to go face-to-face against an army of Deadpool Corps. While the way the fight ended may have felt a little disappointing (with Peter just distracting every variant of the Merc With a Mouth), every other detail is top-notch. And that moment when Deadpool and Wolverine jump out of the bus at the end? Yeah, that one will go down in the history books.
Overall, Deadpool & Wolverine is filled with many amazing action sequences that elevate the movie to a whole new level. Every one of them had its own heart and key differences that made it different from the others. Couple that with an amazing soundtrack, flawless performances from Hugh Jackman and Ryan Renolds, a great number of Easter Eggs, and a solid story, and it's easy to see why this is one of the very best MCU projects ever made.
