22. Pennyworth (2019 - 2022)

Pennyworth (or if we want to go with season 3's more cumbersome title Pennyworth: The Origins of Batman's Butler) had a short run, but it was an eventful one. The show streamed two seasons on Epix before it was brought home to WarnerMedia's HBO Max for the third season. When that season premiered, WB was under new leadership which eventually cancelled the show.

As the title hints, Pennyworth was all about our beloved Alfred Pennyworth, tracking his early days in London, the beginnings of his friendship with Thomas Wayne, and how he came to be the person we fall in love with in every single Batman adaptation. The show's brief run unfortunately means we never reach that endgame, but it did provide 30 episodes of constant entertainment that felt more like a compelling spy thriller that would air on ITV in the UK than a comic book series made for US TV.

There was that joke among DC fans about whether we actually needed Pennyworth or not; but it doesn't matter what your answer to that question is, because the show is a good old-fashioned knees-up and Jack Bannon is bloody brilliant in the role.
