3. Series 9

Peter Capaldi becomes the best version of the Doctor during Series 9, where he has two storylines that fans come back to again and again. While there were some average episodes tossed in, this season is undoubtedly one of the best the show has ever done, with multiple two-part episodes showing how each of the Doctor and Clara's actions have consequences.

The season asks a lot of questions about how a person can be corrupted by time travel and immortality, with the Doctor serving as a powerful foil to Clara and Maisie Williams's Ashildr. Through most of the episodes, the Doctor solves problems by approaching the antagonists with mercy. However, Clara tackles problems by assuming the bravado of Doctors past, and Ashildr copes with her immortality by ignoring her emotions.

The best episodes in this season are "The Zygon Invasion"/"The Zygon Inversion" and "Heaven Sent"/"Hell Bent." In the first, the Doctor gives a speech about war that needs to be played every time a pointless war is started. The second highlights how dangerous Clara and the Doctor are to each other, with the pair being a mythical figure destined to destroy Gallifrey.

Series 9 is not as universally beloved as other seasons of Doctor Who, but it contains moments that the show feels empty without. It may not be the season to rewatch for comfort, but it deserves high praise for its emotional impact.
