9. Series 8

Series 8 was the beginning of Peter Capaldi's reign as the Doctor, and it had a few major questions to answer. Why did the Doctor take the face of a Roman from Series 4? How would his relationship with Clara change in his new form? Critically, the season itself was obsessed with the question: is the Doctor a good person?

While the new, edgy version of the Doctor seemed like a strange response to learning that Gallifrey still existed, it was a necessary one after seeing the lengths the Tenth and Eleventh Doctors went to when they gave into their anger. This season lingered on morality, and it lands better on a second viewing.

The horror episodes in this season work well, and the addition of Michelle Gomez's Missy was a great choice. While the Doctor was terrified of losing his morality, it turned out that Clara was losing hers instead. This does a great job bringing back the idea from Series 4 that the Doctor inadvertently turns his companions into soldiers.

Unfortunately, there are also several disappointing episodes in Series 8 which just seem to fill the space between the more engaging adventures. There is more attention than ever on a companion's life away from the Doctor, and it ends up being fairly boring. It's a good season, but there are many skippable episodes during a rewatch.
