As superhero movies began growing in popularity at the box office, Sony entered the mix by bringing everyone's favorite web-slinger to the big screen for the first time in a live-action film. Enter Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker in an origin story that was everything fans could have asked for and more.
While some complained that he was too old, Maguire totally owned that role, bringing Spidey to life in a way that felt genuine and remains one of the greatest superhero performances we've ever seen. Maguire was brilliant in the role as were his costars, particularly Kirsten Dunst, Willem Dafoe, and J.K. Simmons as Mary Jane Watson, Norman Osborne/Green Goblin, and J. Jonah Jameson, respectively.
The strength of the film came in the way in which Sam Raimi embraced the character and delivered a faithful adaptation of the character that audiences had known and loved for years. It stayed faithful to the comics and managed to capture the essence of Peter Parker's journey from awkward teen to web-slinging hero flawlessly.
It was as if Raimi cracked open the comics and brought them to life on the big screen right before our eyes as this was a movie that was so spectacularly crafted with no attention to detail being spared.
